QUEENSBURY- Doris L. Grant, 90, of Austin, TX and Queensbury, NY, passed away peacefully in her sleep with family at her side on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025 at Glens Falls Hospital.
Doris was born on Dec. 28, 1934 in San Antonio, TX, to her mother, Ruth (Johnson) Cromer and her father, Grady Cromer. Her father, unfortunately, passed away early in her life, so Doris was raised by her mother alone, whom she loved with all her heart.
Doris graduated from Robstown High School in Robstown, Texas in 1953. Shortly after graduating, Doris fell in love with Carmon Grant, a handsome young University of Texas Civil Engineer who, as she told the story, had a nice watch and shoes. Shortly after that they were married on Nov. 27, 1953 in Robstown, Texas. Doris and Carmon resided in Austin, TX their entire married life where they raised their two daughters and shared 62 beautiful years of marriage.
Doris was employed as a secretary for most of her working years. Her favorite job was working at the Sweet Publishing Company.
As a young girl, Doris accepted Jesus as her Savior and Lord and she followed Him the rest of her days. She was a beautiful reflection of Christ’s love in her home and church community.
Doris was a charter member of Westover Hills Church of Christ in Austin, TX where she made many friends who became spiritual brothers and sisters. She served in the benevolent ministry at Westover and also volunteered with InKind for several years. Doris had a heart for the spiritual growth of women. She attended and also lead many Bible Study Fellowship groups.
Upon moving to Queensbury, Doris joined Pine Knolls Alliance Church where she loved and was loved by many. Doris served as a greeter at both of her churches.
Loving her family was what Doris enjoyed most, and she did this well. She always surrounded herself with family and friends, having her granddaughter care for her in Rochester before living her last 5 years with her youngest daughter and son in law.
Doris, or Mimi to her grandchildren, was treasured as an extraordinary grandmother who loved intensely and never failed to show it or say it. Her lively spirit lives in all of them. She absolutely cherished every moment shared with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doris adored music, especially Carol King, Carly Simon, Willie Nelson, and Michael Bublé. Attending concerts for Willie and Michael were highlights of her later years.
Doris was a passionate University of Texas sports fan and would often watch UT football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and basketball games on television. She often expressed a particular love of football, but that really only extended as far as the Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys.
Truly there was no other classy, sassy southern bell like Miss Doris. She had a special place in all our hearts. If Doris could write a poem to all of us now, it might go something like this…

Carry my stories, my laughter, my song

And know in your hearts, you’ve helped me along

For though I am resting, my journey is through

Part of my soul will live on in you.

Doris is survived by her two daughters, who were her best friends, Valorie Berta (Chuck) of The Woodlands, TX and Vanessa Benson (Keith) of Queensbury, NY; three grandchildren, Mandy Camping (Erich) of Rochester, NY, Grant Benson (Haley) of Round Rock, TX, and Clay Benson (Zoe) of Rochester, NY; three great-grandchildren, Charlie, Theodore, and Samuel, and two on the way. Survivors also include a sister in law, Betty Jean Grant, two nieces, Kim Fancher (Powell) and Penny Merriman, along with several great nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Carmon.
The family wishes to thank Dr. John Quaresima and Dr. Gregory Kelly for their extraordinary and compassionate efforts in caring for sweet Doris, especially at the end of her life. The family is also extremely grateful to Doris’ amazing and steadfast caregiver and companion, Gretchen DeLong.
A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 12 pm, Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Westover Hills Church of Christ, 8332 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas with a luncheon to follow.
Doris’ remains will be interred next to her husband’s and mother’s at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery in Austin, TX. A private committal service will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in memory of Doris to either Pine Knolls Alliance Church in South Glens Falls, NY or Westover Hills Church of Christ in Austin, TX.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth.
