đź’§ Why deflate a saline implant before surgery?

In some cases, we’ll intentionally deflate a saline implant using a syringe the day before removal.

Because saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater, the fluid can be safely drained — allowing the implant to collapse.

Why do this?
✔️ Makes extraction easier
✔️ Allows removal through a smaller incision
✔️ Reduces unnecessary tissue stretching
✔️ Improves surgical control during removal

By decompressing the implant ahead of time, we can often make the procedure smoother and more efficient.

Sometimes the simplest step makes the biggest difference in precision.

🧼 Why I don’t throw the sponge in the trash after scrubbing

After completing a surgical scrub, your hands are sterile.

The trash can? Not sterile.

Reaching over to toss a sponge may seem harmless — but there’s no reason to risk contaminating freshly scrubbed hands before entering the OR.

Once the scrub is done:
✔️ Hands stay elevated
✔️ Contact with non-sterile surfaces is avoided
✔️ Every movement is intentional

Sterility isn’t about convenience. It’s about minimizing unnecessary risk.

In surgery, small details protect patients.

Precision starts long before the first incision.

đź”´ Red Light Therapy in Post-Op Recovery

Recovery doesn’t end when surgery does.

Red light therapy (low-level light therapy) is increasingly used in post-operative care to support the body’s natural healing process.

Potential benefits include:
✔️ Supporting circulation
✔️ Reducing inflammation
✔️ Promoting collagen production
✔️ Assisting with tissue repair
✔️ Helping improve scar appearance over time

By delivering specific wavelengths of light to the skin, red light therapy stimulates cellular activity — particularly within the mitochondria — which plays a role in healing and regeneration.

It’s not a replacement for proper surgical technique or post-op instructions. It’s an adjunct tool that can support recovery when used appropriately.

Healing is a process — and every detail matters.

Follow for evidence-based recovery insights and surgical education.

Happy Presidents’ Day 🇺🇸

Some surgeons say they’ve been practicing for decades. We’ve apparently been doing it since the founding of the county.
