The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) estimates 125,000 deaths occur every year in the United States because of medicines not being taken correctly. To assist in minimizing these adverse outcomes, the FDA provides the following medication safety tips.
1. Always take as prescribed. Take medications as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist.
2. Store appropriately and check expiration dates. Some medications need to be refrigerated, some should be stored in a cool dry place. Ensure you follow proper storage instructions. This will help ensure medications are working the way they should.
3. Be aware of potential medication interactions and side effects. Informing all providers of the medications you are taking is important to make sure they are aware of possible interactions. Your pharmacist is available to discuss
potential side effects.
4. Keep a medication list.
Keeping a medication list that you can take with you to doctor's appointments or hospital visits will assist your health care providers to provide the best care.
