Common Features & Designs of Safety Coffins:

- Bells & Flags: Cords connected to the occupant's hands or head would ring a bell or raise a flag above ground.

- Air Tubes: Provided fresh air from the surface.

- Windows: Glass panels allowed the occupant to see out and the surface to see in.

- Keys & Locks: Some had internal locks or keys in a shroud pocket to unlock the lid.
