✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today we are celebrating Tosin Anjorin, MS, LPC Associate, EMDR Trained, whose journey into counseling reflects purpose, passion, and a deep commitment to empowering others.

Tosin shares that she has always been “the therapist friend,” someone others naturally felt safe opening up to. Over time, she discovered there was a science behind her love for helping others, which ultimately led her to pursue counseling as a career.

Her journey began early, taking AP Psychology in 9th grade, where she found herself deeply fascinated in a way no other subject had sparked before. That passion continued to grow as she completed a clinical psychology summer program at Duke University, followed by a Human Rights Advocacy course there the next summer, reflecting the strong humanistic lens she brings to her work.

Tosin went on to earn her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Sciences from University of Texas at Austin, and later completed her MS in Professional Counseling at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. Along the way, she has published a children’s book, created accessible resources for clients, returned to her high school as a keynote speaker, and continues to pursue new projects that expand her impact.

Through her work, Tosin hopes to remind others that brighter days are possible. She brings her lived experiences into the therapy space with intention, offering clients hope and the reminder that a diagnosis does not define their future.

This journey has also shaped how Tosin sees herself. She shares that one of the most meaningful things she has learned is that she is capable of turning her dreams into reality. If she can envision it, she believes it is possible.

Her message to women pursuing this path is both empowering and deeply intentional:

💜 Your journey may include obstacles, but those obstacles are often signs of how needed you are in this field. There is someone out there who needs to see themselves in you. Keep going, not only for yourself, but for those you will inspire along the way.

For Tosin, being part of the Distinctive team means having a strong support system that continually reminds her of her value and potential. It is a space that provides encouragement, opportunity, and the motivation to grow into the counselor she is becoming.

💜 Thank you, Tosin, for the light, vision, and empowerment you bring to this work.

✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today we are honoring Clara Jobe, MS, LPC, LCDC, EMDR Trained, whose journey into counseling reflects determination, purpose, and a deep belief in the power of healing and connection.

Clara shares that she first felt called to counseling as a senior in high school. Although she initially pursued a path in the medical field, that journey unexpectedly shifted, making it clear that counseling was a calling she could no longer ignore. She describes this work as something she was placed on this earth to do, and cannot imagine herself doing anything else. Counseling is truly where her heart is.

Throughout her journey, Clara has recognized her natural ability to connect with others by building trust, understanding, and meaningful relationships. Supporting family and friends through their own hardships helped her develop a strong sense of empathy, which continues to shape her work today. She also reflects on how her own life experiences allow her to relate to clients in powerful ways and support them through similar challenges.

Completing her final year of graduate training during the start of the pandemic in 2020 brought its own challenges and growth. That experience became an important turning point in her journey. Clara also followed a second calling to work with children and teens. After initially being turned away, she remained patient and committed, eventually becoming part of Distinctive Counseling and eventually working as a Distinctive Play Counselor. She describes this work as both challenging and deeply meaningful. Incorporating EMDR into her practice has further expanded her ability to support clients in healing in ways she once could not have imagined.

Through her work, Clara hopes to help each client better understand themselves, recognize their strengths, and realize their value in the world. She strives to be someone her clients can trust as they work toward their highest potential, always reminding them that they are not alone.

This profession has also been transformational for Clara personally. She shares that it has shown her what it feels like to reach her own potential and experience true fulfillment. Through this work, she has learned that no obstacle is too great to overcome. She has discovered her strength, her determination, and the importance of continuing to fight for what she believes in. Each day is a reminder of how far she has come and what is possible through perseverance.

Her encouragement for women pursuing this path is heartfelt and empowering:

💜 "If you have a true passion for this work, go for it and do not let anything stand in your way. Work through your fears, take it one step at a time, and trust that you will get where you are meant to be." - Clara Jobe

For Clara, being part of the Distinctive team means never having to do this work alone. It is a space where she can collaborate with trusted professionals who share her values, integrity, and commitment to growth. It is a community where support, learning, and connection are always present.

💜 Thank you, Clara, for the passion, strength, and heart you bring to this work.

✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today we are celebrating LaJoya "Joya" Williams, MS, LPC-Associate, whose journey into counseling reflects resilience, authenticity, and a deep commitment to creating spaces where people feel seen and empowered.

Joya shares that counseling has always felt like her calling. For as long as she can remember, people have trusted her with their most vulnerable stories. Her own life experiences also sparked a deep curiosity about human behavior and the reasons behind why people do the things they do. Those experiences ultimately led her to pursue a path where she could support others through understanding, connection, and compassion.

Her journey into the counseling profession has not been without challenges. Joya describes the road to licensure as a little bumpy, with several personal life experiences unfolding along the way. Despite those moments, she never felt discouraged from becoming a counselor. Instead, the journey strengthened her resilience and deepened her ability to meet clients exactly where they are in their own healing process.

Through her work, Joya hopes to create spaces where clients feel safe enough to become the most authentic versions of themselves. She believes the counseling relationship should empower individuals to embrace that authenticity not only in the therapy room but also in their everyday lives.

This profession has also brought meaningful personal growth for Joya. She reflects that advocating for her clients to take up space has encouraged her to do the same. The work she does with clients has helped her rediscover and strengthen her own voice.

Her encouragement for women pursuing this path is grounded in honesty and care:

💜 "This work takes courage and intentional time to recharge. Surround yourself with a strong support system that helps refill your cup." - Joya Williams

For Joya, being part of the Distinctive team means practicing with integrity while advocating for marginalized populations. It also means being part of a community where she feels supported, heard, and empowered to show up as her most authentic self in the work she does.

💜 Thank you, Joya, for the heart, courage, and authenticity you bring to this profession.

✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today, we are honoring Jennifer Lowery, MS, LPC, EMDR Trained, whose journey into counseling reflects a deep legacy of compassion and a commitment to helping children and families heal.

Jennifer shares that her inspiration to pursue the helping profession began with her paternal grandmother, Viola Franks, who spent more than 40 years showing kindness, care, and compassion in her work with children and their families. Watching her grandmother’s dedication left a lasting impression and planted the seed for Jennifer’s own path in service to others.

Her professional journey has been rich and meaningful. Jennifer first served as a classroom teacher, reading instructor, and school counselor before becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. Each step along the way deepened her commitment to supporting young people and their families. A pivotal milestone for Jennifer was becoming a fully licensed LPC and discovering the powerful impact of EMDR therapy, which allows her to help clients process trauma and move toward healing.

Through her work, Jennifer hopes to make a lasting impact by helping break cycles of generational trauma and supporting children and families in building healthier futures. She is passionate about helping today’s youth develop a stronger vision for their lives and empowering them to move toward positive outcomes.

This profession has also shaped Jennifer’s perspective on connection and community. One of the most meaningful lessons she carries is the belief that when we help others, we rise together. As she beautifully shares, shared joy becomes double joy, and shared sorrow becomes half a sorrow.

Her encouragement to women considering this path is both simple and powerful:

💜 "Work hard, trust the process, and trust yourself." - Jennifer Lowery

For Jennifer, being part of the Distinctive team means working alongside professionals who share a vision for creating positive change in the community while respecting and supporting one another’s authentic selves. It is a place where collaboration, encouragement, and consultation allow everyone to continue growing together.

💜 Thank you, Jennifer, for the compassion and dedication you bring to this work and to the families you serve.

✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today we are honoring Heather Garcia, MS, LPC, EMDR Trained, Gottman Level 1 Trained, whose path into counseling reflects resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to helping others create meaningful change in their lives.

Heather shares that her inspiration to pursue counseling began with her father. Growing up with a parent who struggled with alcoholism shaped her understanding of both the power of change and the challenges that come when someone is not ready for it. That experience helped her realize that while some people may resist change, many others truly want something different for their lives but may not know how to get there. Heather felt called to be someone who could walk alongside people and help guide them toward that change.

Her journey into this work has been shaped by several meaningful experiences. Her military background played an important role in paving the way for her educational journey and helped shape the person she brings into the therapy room today. Graduate school was another pivotal chapter. The friendships she formed during that time became an important source of support and encouragement. Many of those relationships remain strong today, and some of those peers have even become colleagues, making the journey even more meaningful.

Through her work, Heather hopes to create spaces where people feel safe enough to be honest, vulnerable, and empowered to grow. She is especially passionate about helping individuals and couples build healthier relationships with themselves and others while also increasing awareness about emotional wellness in the broader community, particularly among minority and marginalized groups.

This profession has also deepened Heather’s understanding of herself. She has learned the power of empathy and the importance of continual personal growth. For Heather, showing up authentically with compassion, curiosity, and humility is just as important as any clinical skill. She values modeling the importance of being comfortable in your own skin and embracing who you are.

Her encouragement for women pursuing this path is powerful and grounding:

💜 “Trust your voice and your purpose. The work can be demanding, but it is also deeply meaningful. Stay connected to why you started, continue learning, and remember that your presence alone can be a powerful catalyst for someone’s healing.” - Heather Garcia

For Heather, being part of the Distinctive team means collaborating with professionals who share a commitment to excellence and compassionate care. She values working alongside people who believe in growth, integrity, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the clients we serve.

💜 Thank you, Heather, for the dedication and heart you bring to this work.

✨ HERstory in the Making | Women’s History Month ✨

Today, we are celebrating Sandy, whose work as a counselor reflects compassion, resilience, and a deep commitment to helping others heal and grow.

Sandy shares that her inspiration to pursue counseling began early in life. She was raised by parents who consistently helped others, which nurtured her natural desire to support people. Her own experience with a compassionate therapist during her mental health journey also played a powerful role in shaping her path. That support inspired her to help others overcome challenges in the same way she was able to.

Throughout her journey, Sandy has been shaped by the mentors who guided and encouraged her along the way. Each mentor offered insight and wisdom that contributed to the therapist she is today. One of the most meaningful parts of her work has been supporting children who have experienced trauma. Their courage and resilience continue to inspire her and strengthen her dedication to this profession.

Through her work with clients and in the community, Sandy hopes to help people become the best versions of themselves, empowering them to pursue the lives they dream about. She believes that when individuals develop emotional strength and self-awareness, they not only transform their own lives but can also inspire positive change within their communities.

This profession has also taught Sandy something powerful about herself. She has discovered her ability to hold space for others’ pain while also carrying hope and compassion as they move toward healing. She believes that simply being present with someone, authentically and human to human, can be one of the most meaningful parts of the healing process. At the center of that work is the therapeutic relationship, where trust and connection create space for change.

Her encouragement for women pursuing this path is heartfelt:

💜 "This work will challenge you, but the reward is often greater than you could have imagined. Be your authentic self, stay patient with the process, and trust that your presence and compassion will make a difference." - Sandy Munoz

For Sandy, being part of the Distinctive team means belonging to a community that celebrates diversity, growth, and individualized care. She values working alongside professionals who share a commitment to supporting both clients and one another.

💜 Thank you, Sandy, for the care and heart you bring to this work.

✨ HERstory in the Making: Women’s History Month ✨

Today, we are honoring Victoria Cadena, who made HERstory by becoming an LPC Associate in Texas after graduating from Texas A&M University–Kingsville. Her journey reflects the heart of why so many counselors enter this profession: a deep commitment to creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued.

Victoria shares that her inspiration to pursue counseling comes from a passion for creating a warm and welcoming space where people feel safe sharing their stories and the experiences that shaped them. She has always valued giving others the time and space to talk, and now she has the privilege of doing that every day through her work.

Her counseling journey has been meaningful and rewarding, with each step strengthening her commitment to helping others grow, heal, and feel understood.

Through her work with clients, Victoria hopes to leave a lasting reminder of each person’s worth and the value they bring into the lives of those around them. She describes it as an honor to walk alongside others as they navigate their journeys.

This profession has also deepened Victoria’s understanding of herself. She reflects that she continues to grow through her connections with others, and that the courage, honesty, and vulnerability of clients constantly inspire her own personal growth.

Her message to other women pursuing this path is simple and powerful:

💜 "Keep going and never give up, even when you face obstacles. The work you do matters, and this career chose you for a reason."

For Victoria, being part of the Distinctive team means belonging to a supportive community of inspiring counselors who genuinely love the work they do.

✨ HERstory in the Making; Women’s History Month ✨

Today, we celebrate International Women's Day and kick off Women's History Month by honoring the HERstories behind the women who make Distinctive Counseling & Consulting what it is today.

We will begin by sharing the HERstory of Dr. Jinnelle Veronique Powell, PhD, LPC-S, EMDR Trainer & Consultant, our Founder and CEO.

Dr. Powell started Distinctive Counseling & Consulting, PLLC, in the middle of the pandemic while working on her PhD. During a time when so much felt uncertain, SHE saw a clear need in our community for accessible mental health services and meaningful supervised opportunities for counselors pursuing licensure in private practice.

What began in 2020 as a small vision with three LPC Associates and one LPC has grown into something far beyond what SHE imagined. Today, Distinctive is home to:

❤️ 16 fully licensed counselors
❤️ 4 board approved supervisors
❤️ 6 LPC Associates
❤️ 2 counseling students
❤️ 5 incredible administrative team members

Together, we are expanding access to care and investing in the future of our profession.

In 2023, we launched Distinctive Learning, beginning with Lunch and Learns designed to support the growth of clinicians in our community. Since then, Distinctive Learning has grown into an Approved Continuing Education Provider through the National Board of Certified Counselors, creating spaces where counselors can continue developing their clinical skills and professional identity.

In February 2024, Dr. Powell completed her PhD and entered academia, where she now has the privilege of pursuing a research agenda and investing in a passion that has long been close to her heart: imparting knowledge to the next generation of counselors.

"Building Distinctive has been one of the most meaningful journeys of my life. It has held immense challenges alongside extraordinary growth. My story is not defined only by success or only by hardship. It is a story shaped by both.

A story of sorrow and joy.
Loss and resilience.
Purpose and perseverance.

And every day, I am reminded that leadership is not about standing alone. It is about building something meaningful with others." - Dr. Powell

Every woman in our practice carries a story of dedication, courage, and purpose. Throughout this month, we will be sharing the HERstories of the incredible clinicians who make Distinctive what it is today.

Because history is not only something we read about. Sometimes, we are living it. ❤️
