At Distinctive Counseling, we recognize that many in our community are facing challenging times, particularly with the government shutdown and potential loss of SNAP benefits. The impact on families and individuals has been significant, and we see how deeply this affects not only access to food but also peace of mind and emotional well-being.

We want our community to know that you are not alone.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Counselor Support Specialists, who have worked tirelessly to create a Community Resource List — including local food banks, assistance programs, and other vital support services. This list was built with care to help connect our neighbors to the resources they deserve.

Creating Cultural Bridges through Cultural Humility: Honoring Stories in Play

✨ What an incredible session we had with Dr. Carla Vasquez-Angeles, Ed.D., LPC, IPT-CST, Certified AutPlay Provider!

Together, we explored how cultural humility—not just cultural competency—can deepen the therapeutic relationship and enrich the play therapy process. Dr. Vasquez-Angeles guided attendees in honoring client and family stories, embracing diverse cultural identities, and applying Child-Centered Play Therapy interventions that foster connection and healing.

Participants left with valuable insights on:
✅ Understanding the difference between cultural humility and competency
✅ Recognizing how culture shapes play and family dynamics
✅ Integrating cultural awareness into play-based interventions

Dr. Shapiro's words resonated with me particularly this weekend as we explored the nuances of working with specific populations, clients with complex trauma, and what to do when processing isn't clean, “Clinical work with EMDR is a dance — and the client is the one who leads.” (Shapiro, 2018, p. 346) 💫
