This year, our Alternative Winter Break took us to Dallas (Dec. 14-19) with a focus on hunger and homelessness, and our students showed up ready to serve and learn.
Here’s what we got to be part of:
🥫 The Stewpot Pantry
We helped organize their food pantry to support individuals and families experiencing poverty and homelessness in Dallas.
🏠 Austin Street Center
We supported one of Dallas’ largest shelters by sorting donations in their donation room.
🍽️ The Stewpot Second Chance Café at The Bridge
The Stewpot runs the Second Chance Café on the campus of our partner agency, The Bridge, serving three meals a day, seven days a week. We returned later that day to help serve dinner.
🥫 Hunger Busters at Paul Quinn College
We joined the 6th Annual Dallas Police Department Food Giveaway with 45+ community partners, helping distribute 15,000+ pounds of food and holiday turkeys to 1,500+ families.
🎁 The Salvation Army Angel Tree
We sorted, labeled, and organized donations so families could receive gifts and essentials for the holidays.
💜 Our Friends Place
We supported young women experiencing abuse, neglect, poverty, and homelessness through closet organization, gift wrapping, and resident activities.
🛏️ UGM Center of Hope
We helped with hands-on work like painting rooms, moving furniture, and organizing donations for women and children in shelter.
🌟 The Samaritan Inn
We jumped in wherever needed, cleaning, sorting pantry items, organizing donations, and supporting their housing program focused on dignity and independence.
And yes, we ended by letting ourselves breathe a little at the Dallas Zoo 🦒
Grateful for every partner who welcomed us, and proud of our students for choosing service, learning, and community.
