Homocysteine plays a direct role in the methylation system. In addition to getting your methylation system tested, homocysteine is a great addition because it will indicate how well your system is performing. Accumulation or deficient levels can give insight to the function of your body, and the absorption of important vitamins and nutrients. Learn more about the different Methylation Components below!

MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase): Responsible for converting folic acid into its active form and aiding in homocysteine metabolism which is essential for DNA and cell replication, protein synthesis, and other bodily functions
MTR (5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase): Aids in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine by encoding the enzyme Methionine Synthase
MTRR (5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase reductase): Ensures that the Methionine Synthase enzyme becomes reactivated in the methylation process to help support DNA repair and brain function
COMT (Catechol-O-Methyltransferase): Activates the COMT enzyme that breaks down and regulates important neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine
AHCY (S-Adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase); Maintains the balance of the methylation cycle
HOMOCYSTEINE: involved directly in methylation reactions
