ICE deported Juana 36 weeks into her pregnancy over the weekend. She had been at Dilley trailer prison for three months with her two young children. She was fearful of giving birth while imprisoned. When ICE first attempted to deport her, doctors and airlines REFUSED to clear her for travel because she was too close to her due date. But ICE shopped around for a doctor and airline that would be complicit in this cruelty.
Juana said that the stress is so bad that her hair is falling out—that she can’t take it anymore. I am gravely concerned that ICE is failing to meet the most basic medical needs of expecting mothers like Juana while imprisoned. Treating pregnant women and their unborn children with such cruelty is unconscionable. I will continue to inspect Dilley and uncover how ICE is treating pregnant women—who they hid from me during my last oversight inspection—to ensure their safety and wellbeing. We must and .
