I am a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and here are 5 things I tell my clients about starting a lymphatic health routine at home:
1. Start (and end) at the Collarbone (The "Traffic Jam" Method) Always start by stimulating the lymph nodes above your collarbone (supraclavicular nodes) first. Imagine clearing a "traffic jam" from the top down; if you don't clear the exit point, fluid cannot drain properly from your face or limbs.
2. Incorporate Deep Breathing: Deep diaphragmatic breathing (aka belly breathing) helps move lymph from the lower body and abdomen up to the chest for drainage.
3. Use Extremely Light Pressure: When doing your self-massage, remember that lymph vessels/collectors are very superficial, just below the skin. Use a "feather-light" touch; this isn't a "sore muscle massage". Massaging too hard can actually close the vessels instead of draining them.
4. You have to MOVE! The lymphatic system doesn't have a pump (nope, the heart is for the vascular system). When your muscles move, your lymph moves. Simple activities like jumping, calf raises, trunk twists, arm circles, walking, and stretching are effective.
5. You don't need fancy gadgets: Yes, really! Brushes, rollers, vibration plates, fascia massagers, rebounders - they have their place as aids, but you don't really *need* them. Your own hands and movement are all you need.
