In Loving Memory of Phyllis Ann Hoffman
(June 26, 1932 – April 24, 2026)

Phyllis Ann Hoffman, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, sister, cherished family matriarch and friend to many, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026 at the age of 93 while in hospice care at Stoneybrook Assisted Living in Corvallis, Oregon. She was born on June 26, 1932, in Banks, Oregon, to Joe and Marie Gamroth, the first of five children in a hardworking, close-knit family shaped by the challenges of the Great Depression.

Phyllis spent her early childhood in the rural communities northwestern Oregon, where her parents built a new life through perseverance, ingenuity, and love. Her upbringing in small-town Oregon, from Banks to Salem and eventually Woodburn, formed the heart of whom she became - resilient, compassionate, curious, and deeply devoted to her family.

A gifted student with a keen love of science, Phyllis graduated from Mt. Angel Academy in 1950 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Marylhurst College, completing one of the school’s most demanding scientific programs. She went on to earn her certification through the College of American Pathologists and began a long and meaningful career as a medical technologist, later becoming supervisor of microbiology at Eugene Hospital and Clinic.

In 1957, Phyllis married Henry Leroy (“Roy”) Hoffman, and together they raised four children—Dave, Trisha, Mary, and Drew—through a full and often challenging life that took their family across Oregon. Phyllis approached motherhood with the confidence of someone who had already nurtured younger siblings; she was resourceful, steady, and endlessly proud of her children as they grew into adulthood.

After her children were grown and her first career chapter came to a close, Phyllis embarked on an extraordinary new journey. In 1985 she accepted a position in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the King Khalid Eye Specialist Hospital, intending to stay for a year—yet she remained for nearly 15, embracing life abroad with courage, joy, and her trademark sense of adventure. From desert outings to friendships with colleagues from around the world, Phyllis became a global citizen whose stories could fill volumes—indeed, she filled one herself.

Her years working overseas opened the door to world travel, and Phyllis seized every opportunity. She cruised the Nile, explored the Serengeti, kissed the edge of the world fulfilling a life dream of riding the Concorde at Mach 2, traversed Europe with her family, and made lifelong friendships along the way. She cherished every place, every culture, every new face - collecting memories the way others collect postcards.

Upon returning to Oregon, Phyllis continued living and working in the Woodburn area, a community she loved, including many joyful years at her local bookstore—surrounded by her favorite companions: books, stories, and people eager to hear her recommendations. She also devoted herself to helping her own mother, Marie, in her later years, a gift returned with deep affection.

Above all, Phyllis devoted her life to her family. She was the beloved older sister to Patrick, Lucia, Margi, and Mike, and proud mother of four, with seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Marie Gamroth, two brothers, Pat and Mike, and nephew, Brian. She is survived by her two sisters, Lucia and Margi (Dale), and four children, Dave (Suzy), Trish (Joe), Mary (Joe), and Drew (Sarah), seven grandchildren, Megan (Jon), Tony (Porsche), Jordane (Brad), Cody, Timmy (Mackenzie), Lu, and Anna, and nine great grandchildren, Kam, Madelin, Easton, Owen, Callahan, Graham, Henry, Parker, and Luca.

Phyllis will be remembered for her independence, her strength, her humor, her honesty, and her unwavering love. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, curiosity, and generosity that lives on in her entire family, who remain forever grateful for the example she set.

Service announcement will be made at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Phyllis Ann Hoffman to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in Albany, Oregon.(https://samhealth.org/giving/)

J Richard (JR) Bell passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Samaritan Evergreen Hospice House in Albany, OR, he was 96 years old. He passed peacefully in his sleep with family at his bedside. He will be greatly missed. He was a shining light to our family, deeply loved, and remembered for his stories and unique sense of humor.

Born at home in Spring Ranch, Nebraska—not far from where a marker for the Oregon
Trail is now located—to Forrest Bell, who ran a grocery store, and Sara (Hopfer) Bell, who managed the house and later became a dental technician and avid oil painter. Due to the Great Depression and the relocation of a railroad, Spring Ranch declined into a ghost town, resulting in the family moving to Hastings, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school and attended Hastings College briefly. Having heard the engineering department at Purdue University spoken of highly, he decided to transfer to Purdue, where he obtained a B. S. degree in Civil Engineering.

While attending Purdue University, he became involved with the Purdue Playshop, where he met his future wife, Sally Papenguth, with whom he would raise a family and spend 68 years of his life. Their mutual love of the theater led to many trips, over the years, to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. They were married after graduation and found themselves moving to New Jersey because JR had been drafted for the Korean War. He was nearly on the ship to Korea when the cease-fire was announced. He finished his military service teaching radar mechanics at Fort Lewis, his first experience of the Pacific Northwest. It was during this time that he developed his love for teaching.

JR and Sally returned to Purdue to obtain his M. S. in Civil Engineering, specializing in Highway Engineering, and a Ph. D., specializing in Soil Mechanics. Upon receiving his PhD in 1962 he moved his family, which now included two daughters, across the country, one last time, to Corvallis, Oregon, where he joined the civil engineering faculty of Oregon State University. Throughout his tenure at OSU he was a dedicated teacher, regularly conducted research, and was very active in professional societies, including serving on committees for ASCE, IGC, TRB, and ASTM, he also served as Chairman for ASCE in the mid-80’s. In 1973 he received a commendation for Meritorious Service to the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory for “significant and vital contribution to facilities engineering, ocean engineering and environmental protection research.” He is internationally recognized as a pioneer and expert of geosynthetics and has a noteworthy record of publications on geotextiles. In 1993 the North American Geosynthetics Society presented him with the Award of Merit for Outstanding Achievement in his pioneering efforts in geosynthetics, development of new applications, geosynthetics education, and leadership in the advancement of the geosynthetics industry.

Upon retiring after 30 years at OSU in 1993, he commenced traveling extensively with his wife, visiting 47 of 50 states and multiple countries, reaching destinations on 5 continents, including China, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand, and Costa Rica. During his travels, and between trips, he continued his avid interest in bird watching, camping, hunting and fishing. He lived a rich and fulfilling life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally and eldest daughter, Leslie Bell. He is survived by Leslie’s husband, John Yochem; his youngest daughter, Cecily Brown; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be planned for early summer; the date is still to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor J Richard Bell’s memory may donate to the J R Bell & W L Schroeder Fellowship Endowment Fund, which supports ‘support fellowships’ for graduate students in the OSU College of Engineering’s School of Civil and Construction Engineering. To celebrate Earth Day we want to share some information about Natural Burial.

Natural Burial has gained popularity in recent years as a more eco-conscious method of disposition, but it is not a new idea, for much of human history it was one of the main ways in which bodies were laid to rest.

Natural Burial, or "Green Burial" is the practice of placing an unembalmed body into the earth, using only natural, biodegradable materials for the shroud or casket, allowing the body to naturally break down over time and become part of the soil.

There are a few locations in Oregon and Washington which specialize in natural burial, including The Forest Conservation Burial Ground in Southern Oregon, Great River Natural Burial in the Columbia River Gorge, and White Eagle Memorial Preserve in Southern Washington.
