The family moved often during Ruth's early childhood, living in Montana and Idaho, then settling in Vale, Oregon where she completed elementary and high school. Pat McCord July 20, 1953-March 8, 2026

How do you memorialize the Force of Nature that was Pat McCord?

Through her many accomplishments? Pat was a scholar, a teacher, a mentor, a writer, an editor and a published author. She did all of these things with great verve and dedication.

Through her many passions? Pat loved books and accrued a massive personal library. She adored movies and gave the best Oscar parties ever each year. She was a fierce Democrat and threw her support behind all she felt right and true.

Through her loves? Pat met Charlie Amacher in 1979 at Purdue University where they were both graduate students. From the moment she saw him, he had nary a chance. They were destined to marry. He was the ying to her yang, the calm to her storm and the love of her life. They married in 1982 and moved to the mountains of Oregon. In 1985, Pat gave up her goal of achieving a PhD. (She was only missing her dissertation) and devoted herself to what she considered a much higher calling: her three children Alec, Simon and Quinn. She nurtured them, advocated for them, homeschooled them and loved them fiercely. Alec gave her two grandsons whom she adored Elijah and Atticus.

Pat McCord was verbally acute, erudite and endlessly witty...sometimes with a sharp edge but always spot on! There was little Pat loved more than a cold glass of champagne and some lively banter: She almost always had the upper hand!

Pat had a very unique personal style. Her devotion to potions and creams meant she had the most gorgeous skin. She dressed in a manner that expressed herself and no one else... and pulled it off beautifully.

Pat was a great little sister to her three siblings, Jo, Chip (who predeceased her) and Jeff. They both still live in Watseka, Illinois where Pat grew up.

Pat made many many life long friends, all of whom are missing her greatly and feeling the terrible void of her absence.

Pat McCord was fierce.
She was inimitable.
She was wholly herself.

We will miss you forever and always.

A Memorial Service will be held at the McHenry Funeral Chapel, 205 NW 5th St. Corvallis, OR 97330, on Saturday, March 28, at 2:00pm.
