It's Dam Proud Day! Double your impact today and support student researchers like Tatum Joyner.🔬

Thanks to a Dr. Mary McCarthy Summer Student Research Fund scholarship, Tatum spent last summer investigating the cellular pathways of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s with Institute researcher Dr. Maria Purice.

Today's Challenge: Help us reach 100 donations for our scholarships, research, and outreach, and we'll be able to unlock $104,050 in challenge gifts. Plus, Joe and Tanya Beckman will double all gifts received today until we raise $50,000!
👉 lpi.pub/DamProud

For students like Tatum, your gift can be life changing. “Student scholarships are about so much more than paying tuition. It’s also about helping a student grow their sense of purpose and identity,” she says.

A BioHealth Sciences junior, Tatum continues her research in the Purice Lab, helping us understand—and hopefully one day treat—these devastating diseases. What’s next? After graduation, she’s headed into nursing so that she can combine her scientific knowledge with her passion for caring for others.

We love this new article in The Corvallis Inquirer about a little bit of drama between Linus Pauling and J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the Manhattan Project.

Read on for the spilled tea, as well as other more substantial highlights from Dr. Pauling’s rise to prominence as a chemist – and his work promoting nuclear disarmament.

🔎 To dig even further into the fascinating history of the Institute’s co-founder, check out OSU archivist Chris Petersen’s new book, The Many Worlds of Linus Pauling. The Pauling25 discount code is still active for 25 percent off!

Oppenheimer would go on to lead the development of the atomic bomb, while Pauling would take a very different path.

Mark your calendars for Wednesday April 29th and join us in advancing science that helps people live longer, healthier lives!

April 29th is Dam Proud Day, our annual day for online giving. It’s a fun name for this Oregon State “Beaver Nation” effort, and we are indeed proud to be part of that!

🔬At its core, Dam Proud Day is critical for funding research the Linus Pauling Institute is poised to advance — research that investigates the biological mechanisms of aging and metabolic and degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

đź’ŞResearch that leads to better strategies and treatments that help people take charge of their health.

👩‍🎓We’re also highlighting the Institute’s extraordinary environment for teaching tomorrow’s science leaders. On Dam Proud Day, your support can help passionate, talented students who seek to train with us and work on the greatest health challenges of our time.

Stay tuned! lpi.pub/DamProud

Happy Birthday to Dr. Linus Pauling! Today, Feb. 28, marks 125 years since the birth of the Institute’s co-founder.

On Friday, we gathered for our annual Linus Pauling Day Open House & Social to celebrate his incredible legacy and share our latest research with a full house of community and Oregon State University guests. Other highlights included:

🌎 The Legacy: LPI Director Emily Ho and OSU historian Chris Petersen (OSU Special Collections & Archives Research Center) reflected on the ongoing significance of Dr. Pauling’s dual Nobel Prize-winning work in chemistry and peace.

📖 The Stories: We got a sneak peek into Petersen’s new book, The Many Worlds of Linus Pauling. The book explores lesser-known stories about Dr. Pauling’s Oregon roots and the later experiences that shaped his global influence.

🍏 A Milestone: We also celebrated 25 years of the Micronutrient Information Center (MIC)—a global leader for evidence-based nutrition and health information, carrying Dr. Pauling’s vision forward.

There’s still time left in our 25th anniversary drive for the MIC! We are halfway to our $10,000 fundraising goal and have until Monday to close the gap. Whether it’s $5 or $500, your gift supports the rigorous work that brings this free, trusted resource to the world. Thank you!

We have one week and $7,000 to go in our drive to sustain the Institute’s Micronutrient Information Center (MIC)! 🌎

Whether it’s $5 or $500, we hope you can help us reach our goal by March 2 with a donation to: lpi.pub/MIC25

Your gift helps ensure that everyone – including the next generation of researchers and health professionals – has access to the high-quality information they need to improve human health.

As one of our users, Michael Christopher, PhD, recently shared:

"The Micronutrient Information Center (MIC) is an excellent resource I use frequently to learn about nutrition, disease, the importance of vitamins and minerals, and other related topics. …As a scientist, I appreciate MIC's factual, objective, evidence-based content. The information is presented in an easily digestible format; summaries and graphics provide quick overviews, with plenty of detail available when you want to dig into a topic further. I always feel confident in the accuracy of the information, and if any doubts arise, all sources are thoroughly cited and readily accessible for reference."

🔎 What makes nutrition information trustworthy?

The Micronutrient Information Center relies on PhD nutrition scientists to critically review evidence and bring you the latest research results.

It takes weeks of focused effort to carefully evaluate the new science on the roles of vitamins, minerals, and other dietary factors in health and disease. Only expert reviewed information is included in the content of all MIC articles.

All of this can be found online at the MIC — for free! Help support this vital resource for people around the world: lpi.pub/MIC25
