Greetings
National take a hike day
It is raining today in Oregon, all day.
Take high, purposeful, calorie-burning, hiking steps as you launch from your commuter, metal-like, noble, 20 year old, trusty steed that will patiently wait for you as your return in the wet dark
Carrying your fantastic satchel of lunch , of leftovers lovingly created, nutritious gourmets, that will take on better flavor the second day after…
(yeah, whatever- hospital cafeteria, again I hope they have…) without dropping it as you juggle your keys, your cell phone… #$% # once again gravity wins.
A little baklava - crunch, flaky, walnuts and honey
The last day before the Oregon shutdown
Homemade bread day
Fitting.
Quick
Its almost 8.
Smile.
The show must go on.

The Falling Maple Leaf
Out I am in November
A little cold in the ears as I begin
As I ride a bike
On the Willamette River Trail Path
Otherwise it is still t-shirt weather
Racing through the piles of leaves
Resurrected for a second, tossing once more time into the air
Joyful like the month of June
I am laughing inside
I am not alone
I let the others get ahead
I have no reason to worry
On my left are the homeless tents
On my right is a tree filled park
Some are running on the leaf covered path
With masks on, they furrow their eyes and look away
Not sure what we are worried about today
The scientist in me has not seen a study
I think about the operating room
The air is no different; it is pump in from out there or here
Fresh air or sometimes we smell the delivery truck
It is not purified, sorry no such luck
We wash our hands before putting on a surgery gown
The water is just from the tap in large basins
Fear is what we are selling
Sure this virus kills
My brother has had it
He works in a hospital
My sister’s father-in-law
Healthy, but over 70, he caught it
He is now cold and in the ground
There is a pattern but a bit capricious
Sometimes is death
Is not deserved, not earned
The price of life
Happy for a day, then under the knife
We are riding around the Willamette river
That I know better in the summer
I see its splashing waves, I smile knowingly
Inviting me but I know better
I put on my winter cap under my helmet over my ears
My ears are hurting from the cold and the self-generated bike -wind
Makes me think of my wife who tells me about her ear sensitivity
Better, I catch up again
All is happy, I am enjoying
This Oregon November
The colors all around
bright yellows, oranges, a few reds
Brown leaves on the floor crunching is the sound…
-Biff! A yellowed Oregon big-leaf maple leaf
Hits me squarely on my left cheek.
A little sting. Stuns me. I am a little shocked.
You’re not in New England anymore
Did you forget that our leaves are bigger?
With a little wind and rain
They are a force to be reckoned with
I reflect: Life can be short and unpredictable
You never know what may come up and
Hit you in the face or take away your breath
And take away your invincibility
Nature winks, with full culpability
