Without help, survival from sudden cardiac arrest is only about 10%.
🙌 When CPR is started, survival jumps to 30%.
⚡ Add an AED, and survival can reach 50%.

Employee Spotlight: Tina

Meet Tina, one of the familiar faces who helps to keep HCH EMS running strong!

Tina started her EMS career 29 years ago and has been part of the Harrison County team for 27 of those years. Before discovering her passion for EMS, she worked in a factory and even studied to become a legal secretary. But after realizing that path wasn’t for her, she took an EMT class at VUJC and knew she had found her true passion.

After completing her EMT-B and Advanced classes, Tina continued her education and earned a degree as a Paralegal in 2008. Over the years, she’s served on two volunteer fire departments and earned multiple certifications, including Firefighter I & II, Hazmat, Rope Rescue, Technical Rescue, and EVOC.
For the past 11 years, Tina has been HCH EMS’s Office Coordinator, where she plays a key role in billing and operations. But don’t let the office setting fool you — she’s always ready to jump on an ambulance when needed!

When asked about her favorite part of EMS, Tina shared,
“𝘔𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦’𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴. 𝘐𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘸𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

When she’s not at work, Tina enjoys spending time outdoors and with her family. She says she was first drawn to HCH EMS during her Advanced class ride time:
“𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭. 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺.”

Now that you know what Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is—and how it differs from a heart attack– the next question is: 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘪𝘧 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶?

Stay calm, but act fast. Every second counts, and survival depends on immediate action.

👉 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝟗𝟏𝟏 to get help on the way
👉 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐂𝐏𝐑 to keep blood flowing to the brain and vital organs

⚡ An important part of understanding Sudden Cardiac Arrest is knowing it’s an 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮, which is not the same as a heart attack.

👉 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤: Caused by blocked blood flow in the heart.
👉 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 (𝐒𝐂𝐀): Caused by an electrical or structural problem in the heart—sometimes from an undetected condition, infection, or even a hard blow to the chest.

Knowing the difference—and how to act fast—can save a life.
