CBHC is proud to offer support to River View Elementary through the Ohio School Wellness Initiative!

🌟River View Elementary has a Behavioral Health and Wellness Coordinator (BHWC)! 🌟
Our BHWC, Ms. Addy, supports students, staff, and families by promoting emotional wellness and social-emotional learning (SEL) throughout the school. The BHWC role focuses on prevention work — building a strong foundation for long-term well-being by helping students manage emotions, strengthen relationships, and make healthy choices. 💚

This prevention focus is supported through programs like our Student Assistance Program (SAP), which encourages positive relationships, emotional growth, and healthy behavioral functioning. Through SAP, students can access extra support when challenges arise, ensuring they have the tools and connections needed to thrive. 🌱

One way Ms. Addy brings this work to life is through our Little Spot of Feelings Mood Check-In. Each morning, students identify how they’re feeling — a small but powerful step in developing self-awareness, empathy, and emotional regulation.

Recently, Ms. Addy read “The Big Worry Day” and taught students calming breathwork techniques — simple coping strategies they can use anytime they feel overwhelmed or need to find their calm. These skills help students recognize their emotions and respond in healthy, mindful ways. 🌬️💛

CBHC recently attended Head Start’s September Family School Meeting. Renee Fleming, LSW, talked to parents about how trauma impacts children’s behavior and the importance of parent emotional regulation. The event highlighted practical strategies parents can use to support children, foster resilience, and model healthy coping skills.

Parents learned how their own responses to stress directly influence their child’s emotions and behavior. The session provided tools for creating safety at home, encouraging open communication, and supporting healing after difficult experiences.

Trauma is subjective—what is traumatic for one person may not be for another. What can be measured are the effects on functioning, emotions, and behaviors, which helps guide treatment. Some ways to help are:

🛡️ Provide safety – Keep routines consistent and predictable.

👂 Listen & validate – Let them share feelings without judgment.

🎨 Encourage expression – Use play, art, or journaling to release emotions.

🤗 Offer comfort – Be patient, calm, and reassuring.

🧘 Teach coping skills – Practice deep breathing, mindfulness, or grounding.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Model calm behavior – Show healthy ways of handling stress.

💬 Keep communication open – Remind them it’s okay to ask for help.

👩‍⚕️ Seek support – Reach out to a counselor or therapist if needed.

In September we recognize Su***de Prevention, Self-Care Awareness & Recovery Month. We value the active role our local Head Start plays in supporting families with young children within our community.
