Honoring a Local Legend: Joan Pizzo, the “Back Bay Book Queen”

For decades, author and environmentalist Joan Pizzo has inspired generations to cherish the beauty of Newport Beach’s Back Bay through her beloved children’s books — Little Crumb, Amy Avocet, Pelican Bill, and The Tale of the Bay Ducklings.

This month, the community came together at the Heavenly Home in Mission Viejo to celebrate Joan’s incredible legacy.

Surrounded by family and friends, the 88-year-old author read from her stories with her signature warmth and sparkle, reminding everyone that love for nature begins with wonder and the power of storytelling.

From teaching her children about the estuary’s birds to helping protect Upper Newport Bay from development, Joan’s work continues to shape hearts and minds — one story at a time.

🇺🇸This season, we also had the profound honor of celebrating three of our veterans — heroes from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam — whose courage shaped our nation.

Their recognition, captured on ABC7 News, reminded us that honoring a life well lived is one of the greatest gifts we can offer.

🍂 October Reflections: Beauty, Gratitude & Grace

October reminded us how sacred each moment can be when it’s filled with love and purpose.

We began the month at the Crestone End of Life Project, sharing how creativity and compassion can turn even the hardest goodbyes into moments of meaning. Later, our friends from Applied Medical filled our Heavenly Home with pumpkins, mums, and laughter—reminding our residents they are never forgotten.

This month also brought the honor of celebrating three of our veterans—heroes of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam—whose courage continues to shape our nation. Their recognition, featured on ABC7 News, was a powerful reminder that honoring a life well lived is one of the greatest gifts of all.

🎉 Exciting News!

Last week we celebrated an incredible moment with the Samueli Foundation.

Our organization was selected as a 2025 Breakaway Fund grant recipient, receiving $100,000 in support of our accounting, insurance, and operational expertise.

Pictured: Lindsey Spindle, President of Samueli Philanthropy, and Michelle, alongside a video featuring the foundation’s founders, Henry and Susan Samueli.

We are deeply grateful for their generosity and commitment to empowering community organizations like ours.

We were honored to host our 18th Annual Hospice Golf Tournament at Newport Beach Country Club.

Over 100 golfers came together for a day of generosity, laughter, and connection—supporting compassionate end-of-life care.

A heartfelt highlight was the Medal of Bravery presentation to Morgan Leigh Pace Roberto, who shared her powerful story of love, courage, and peace found through hospice care.

Her words captured our mission perfectly: to ensure no one faces life’s final chapter alone.

UCI students brought joy and laughter to the Heavenly Home this week as they joined residents for a pumpkin-painting afternoon. Their energy filled the house with warmth and connection, reminding everyone how small acts of kindness can brighten the season.
