Continuing with the topic of headaches, another headache generator are the sub-occipital muscles that lie at the base of your skull. Pretty much everyone over the age of 12 in Western society has a forward head posture, which mean if your head was in a neutral position you would be looking at the ground all of the time. To be able to look ahead we have to tilt our head up, and the sub-occipitals are the main muscles for doing this.
Often these muscles will get overly tight from over use and slowly create a tension headache. In the short term massage targeting these muscles is beneficial. Another helpful method is to lay down and place a cold canned beverage at the base of your skull. The combination of pressure and cold can calm the tight muscles down. An adjustment can also sometimes be helpful, but really only in tandem with massage.
In the long term of course the ideal solution is to try and correct the forward head posture. The middle of your ear should be even with the middle of your shoulder with your shoulders in a neutral posture.

Headaches are a very studied phenomenon, with often complex answers. A very common headache generator is an overly tight temporalis muscle. The body of temporalis lies in the temple region of your skull, it descends under the zygomatic arch and ends on your lower jaw. It can become overly tight because of clenching, excessive chewing (such as gum chewing) or grinding your teeth. While your jaw may ache, it can often lead to headaches based in the temple region.
Fortunately there are techniques to help relax temporalis (and other jaw muscles) that are easy and effective. Don't forget to let us know if you are suffering from headaches when you come in, while we can't help with every type of headache, we can help with muscle based tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches.

This is a functional scale for when you are asked for pain ratings in a medical setting.

It can be confusing when you are asked to rate your pain on a scale of 1-10. There is very little context and it varies some from person to person. I like to use a functional scale to help people describe their pain.

1. It is the sort of pain you only notice when you are trying to sleep or meditate.
3. You are aware of it, but it fades to the background while you are focused on tasks. As soon as you stop focusing you realize it is still there.
5. You are aware of the pain at all times, but can focus past it to do the things you need to with relative ease.
7. The pain is intense and you can focus past it to do tasks with a lot of effort.
9. The pain is close to overwhelming and it takes a lot of effort and focus just to do simple things like go to the bathroom or get dressed.
10. Tasks are impossible. You cannot think about anything other than the pain.

Did you know that some of the time carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms can be caused or increased by factors other than scar tissue in the carpal tunnel? A common culprit is the pronator teres muscle that lies in your inner forearm just past your elbow. The median nerve, which is the same nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel lies directly beneath the pronator teres. If pronator teres becomes too tight it can squeeze the median nerve and cause carpal tunnel syndrome like symptoms. If you are suffering from mild carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms a tight pronator teres can exacerbate those symptoms and make them worse. Often times we can help alleviate those symptoms!

A frequent question we hear is, “If I go to a chiropractor will I have to go for the rest of my life?” People have either run into chiropractors that told them this, or they have heard from friends who have heard this. While each person is different, and each injury or dysfunction is different the short answer is no, the dysfunction that brought you here is likely to resolve in at most 4-6 weeks, often much sooner with treatment.
Do some people have injuries or conditions that cause structural damage to the extent that they will need frequent care? Yes, there are some people that fall into that category. Are there people that have degeneration or injuries that have made areas unstable and likely to lead to reinjury in the same area? Yes, that can happen too, though it can be helped or mitigated with proper rehabilitative exercises, elimination of inflammatory foods from the diet, changes in body mechanics, and in some cases braces, orthotics, or other hardware.
For most people it is a matter of restoring the natural movement of their joints, structural repatterning, activating muscles that are underperforming, and loosening muscles that are over performing. In other words, a combination of adjusting and massage work, to help your body restore its natural movement and strength. Usually along with a few exercises at home to help speed the recovery and, strengthen the area to reduce the likelihood of a repeat injury in the same place.
Would many people benefit from regular visits to check that their muscles are balanced, and structural issues are addressed before it reaches a crisis point? The answer is again, yes. Part of the issue is that America does not have health care. The current medical system is not well suited to promoting health and well being in the populace. It is crisis care that only addresses illness or dysfunction afterwards. I suggest that it would be better to have regular treatments every 3-8 weeks and reduce the chance of suffering painful neck or back injuries or dysfunctions.

Should we make a few simple videos with back strengthening exercises? In the future would it be helpful to have a small library of videos for stretches and exercises to refer to while at home?
