Start Healing Now

Start Healing Now SHN, a nonprofit
organization based in Wisconsin SHN was founded in 2013 by Wisconsin mother Linda Lenz after losing her son Tony to an accidental overdose.

Since 2015, Jessica Geschke has served as President of SHN. Jessica began working within SHN and other Wisconsin-based advocacy groups after nearly losing her brother to an overdose. Jessica, along with her board of directors have spent years volunteering including endless hours of planning and executing events to raise money to help educate the public and get those addicted into treatment. Their tireless efforts have saved so many lives and have saved so many families the pain of losing their loved one. Most recently the Board of Directors have embarked on a new direction with SHN. This has included the renaming of the 501C3 non-profit and branding of the page and new website and a name change to Start Healing Now. This nonprofit organization provides a solid base of continuous care, including resources and financial assistance for safe and structured sober living homes, education, transitional aftercare programs and free access to the lifesaving drug, Narcan. Your donations to SHN fuel the OAK Program, the road to recovery and a new life for those who struggle with the disease of addiction. Your donation will literally save a life! Narcan, provided free of charge and distributed across the country, saves lives daily by reversing the effects of an overdose. There is no chance of recovery if addiction ends up in a fatal overdose but with Start Healing Now thousands will be saved in order to give them a second chance at life. Please Donate Now. 📉 Wisconsin is seeing a significant decline in overdose deaths — roughly 20%+ year over year.

This didn’t happen because of one policy or one program.

It’s the result of many efforts working together:

• Widespread access to naloxone
• Increased awareness, recovery, and harm-reduction education
• Expanded treatment access
• Federal and international actions targeting fentanyl trafficking
• Communities, families, schools, and peers showing up sooner and more often

Public health data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show this progress — and also remind us the work isn’t done.

Not one thing — but everything.

And every life saved is worth continuing the fight. 💜

Great Reminder! With temperatures hitting -7 degrees this weekend, be mindful of the naloxone!

Thank you to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Division of Care and Treatment Services. Their office collaborated with the Center for Innovative Transition, Education & Employment at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to host the Wisconsin Substance Use Prevention Conference held on September 10-11, 2025, and during that event, our very own was honored with an award.

Savanna recently came home on winter break from college so our team was able to celebrate this achievement with her!

Congratulations Savanna for being selected as the recipient of the Leaders of the Next Generation:
Outstanding Youth Advocate for Substance Use Prevention award. This award recognizes young adults for their extraordinary efforts and leadership in advocating for substance use prevention initiatives that empower their peers to live happier and healthier lives. We recognize and admire the work that you have done in your community to promote health and build resiliency. Your efforts to educate, mobilize, and empower show that the future of substance use prevention is bright.

Check out the envelope her award came in! It was created especially for her by contemporary Ojibwe artist David Edwards. David infuses each piece of his artwork with deep cultural meaning. Through his art, he hopes to inspire healing, positive reflection, and pride in the language and teachings of the Ojibwe people.

Thank you again Savanna and congratulations!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life fighting for equity and justice. He taught us that even in the face of intimidation and discrimination, we must never stop working towards a better future – a lesson that feels especially relevant today.

Change has never been easy. It takes persistence and determination, and requires all of us to speak out and stand up for what we believe in. As we honor Dr. King today, let’s draw strength from his example, and do our part to build on his legacy.

“My hand is at the small of your back; I may let you stumble, but I will never let you fall.” — Maya Angelou

January is Mental Wellness Month, a time to honor emotional care, healing, and the quiet strength it takes to keep going. Dr. Angelou reminds us that we are not meant to navigate life alone — that support, love, and compassion can hold us steady even when we falter.

Caring for our mental well-being is not a weakness. It is an act of courage, trust, and self-preservation.

You are allowed to stumble. You are never meant to fall alone. 🤍
