Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for human physiology, serving as a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions. The 2013 NHANES found that 48% of the United States population consumed less than the recommended daily allowance for magnesium. Additionally, magnesium status can be negatively impacted by aging, certain health conditions, medications, exercise and diet choices.

A sufficient level of magnesium is essential for the health and function of the brain. A patient provided me with this information today. She entered data extracted from her Ancestry account and entered into Genetic Genie - it also works with 23andme and others. We were able to compare it to specific genetic testing recently performed by our office and it was an exact match! I must admit that I was highly skeptical. I expected this tool to lack accuracy or validity, but it did not (at least in this case). I found it to be interesting and something I wanted to pass along. It may offer some insight into your genetic composition and its free. I would continue to recommend seeing a qualified Functional Medicine Practitioner or Geneticist if you are experiencing symptoms that have you seeking treatment, but here is just another tool that you may already have at your fingertips!
