Have you ever seen an athlete on TV with multiple round, dark circles on their body (as if they got into an encounter with an octopus)? If so, that is actually a result of cupping therapy!
Cupping is a technique that involves placing cups along the body to create a suction, which in turn, draws the various tissues up into the cup. While there are many benefits to cupping, some get concerned about the markings that may occur as a result of treatment. The coloring of the marks is related to stagnation, which refers to accumulation of metabolic waste, toxins and poor blood circulation in the muscles. Here's a quick explanation of the different colors you may see with treatment:
🟥⬜️ Light Pink or Red Marks 👉 seen in areas with good circulation and minimal stagnation. Typically suggests a generally healthy area with minimal amounts of toxins or stagnation.
🟥🟥 Bright Red Marks 👉 often indicates an active or acute condition, such as a muscle strain, inflammation or injury. Suggests that the body is actively dealing with stress or tension but is also actively healing.
🟥🟪 Dark Red or Purple Marks 👉 often indicates chronic conditions and long-term stagnation of blood or a build-up of toxins. Suggests restricted blood flow or tension in the muscles for an extended period, but is also a sign that the therapy is helping to release deep blockages and toxins.
🟨🟩 Yellow or Greenish Marks 👉 typically less common but is a sign that the body is breaking down and metabolizing waste products.
⬜️⬜️ No Marks 👉 usually seen in areas where there is good circulation and minimal stagnation.
Overall, the colors of the cupping marks offer great and valuable insight into the body's condition and the effectiveness of the treatment. Interested in trying cupping or want more information? Don't hesitate to reach out! Dr. Felicia would be happy to answer any questions you may have.
