Soft tissue mobilization

Soft tissue mobilization is the assessment, evaluation, and treatment of specific soft tissues (ligaments, muscles, tendons, and fascia) with the goal of improving the nervous, musculoskeletal, lymphatic, and circulatory systems.

Soft Tissue Mobilization can help resolve nerve entrapments caused by tight muscles or treat tendonitis due to overuse and repetitive motions. For a clinician to be successful using this therapeutic procedure, it requires an absolute understanding of human anatomy (i.e. the structure) and physiology (i.e. the function) of the human body.

Massage is a broad technique that is used by massage therapists and physical therapists. Massage helps to increase blood flow to the muscles, which in turn helps the muscles to relax and prevent or reduce pain associated with muscle spasms.

It also is a wonderful way to relax and take a moment to reset and re-center yourself, an important component of self-care.

Sequential Compression Therapy

Compression Therapy helps athletes recover and rehabilitate between training sessions or following competitive events and consists of a compression device that surrounds your arms, legs, or hips.

These compression units then utilize compressed air to massage your limbs, leading to mobilized fluid and faster recovery and recuperation following intense exertion. The pulsing alternates between different zones while other areas hold, improving the movement of fluid out of the limbs.

Sequential Compression can also be used for those individuals suffering from swelling conditions, such as lymphedema, venous insufficiency, and for varicose veins. However, it is important to note that prior to using any form of sequential compression, a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare practitioner is completed to prevent complications.

Some swelling conditions are due to blood flow not reaching the lower legs and feet, this is called Arterial Insufficiency. Compressing an extremity that already has poor circulation can lead to damage to the tissue. Also, those individuals with a history of, or are being treated for, blood clots should not use sequential compression.

Therapeutic Strengthening and Stretching - A Powerful Prescription for Good Health

The benefits of strengthening and stretching can assist you in achieving your health and athletic goals, but it can also assist you in improving your overall quality of life.

Dr. Peyton estimates that approximately 95% of the clients she sees have muscle imbalances that stem from years of bad posture, injury, or both. Always keep in mind that if a muscle is tight, it is also weak. Conversely, if a muscle is overstretched (elongated too much), it is also weak. This results in pain and movement problems.

Peyton Physical Therapy can help you learn which muscles you should stretch, which muscles you should strengthen, and how to properly perform both to prevent injury, rehab a current injury, and ultimately resolve any muscle imbalances you may have.

Decrease your daily aches and pains with a customized stretching and strengthening program and improve your ability to move.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), is a very gentle form of massage used to relieve pain caused by a backpack of lymphatic fluid (a condition called Lymphedema) in your arms and/or legs. It is one part of a more comprehensive treatment protocol called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

Lymphedema is a common complication for people recovering from breast cancer surgery. Also, men who have undergone prostate or pe**le cancer, or even those individuals suffering from venous insufficiency (a condition that causes discoloration and swelling of your lower legs and feet), as well as people with varicose veins.

It is important to remember that not all swelling conditions are lymphedema, and not all types of lymphedema have swelling that is visible. If you have any of the conditions mentioned above and you feel that your clothes are fitting a little bit snugger than usual (and not related to the holiday meals we all will be consuming), it may be a sign that you need to speak with your doctor and ask them about lymphedema.

Dr. Peyton is a highly skilled lymphedema clinician and has worked with many vascular conditions, especially lymphedema Visit us at: https://peytonphysicaltherapy.com/ for more information and appointment details.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) vs. Massage – What’s the Difference?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) and massage are two different therapeutic procedures used by physical therapists for treating soft tissue injuries. With IASTM, physical therapists target specific muscle fibers (or other specific soft tissues) that are causing you pain by using a stainless-steel tool to help realign the fibers and break down scar tissue.

Massage, on the other hand, is a more generalized approach to working with muscles, and depending on the type of massage, it can provide relaxation and/or help your muscles recover from strenuous activity. Both approaches can be incredibly beneficial to helping you feel better and stay healthy.

Dr. Peyton is a Certified IASTM Practitioner who utilizes both techniques to help you feel better and restore optimal function. With over 21 years of experience, she will know what approach(es) are best for you.

Knee Pain While Standing, Sitting, or Walking?

Knee pain can range from minor to severe and acute to chronic. A direct blow to the knee or a quick movement that stresses the knee beyond its normal range of motion can cause ligament or cartilage injuries.

Osteoarthritis is another condition where “wear and tear” over the years can cause a joint to become arthritic. It is one of the most common causes of knee pain.

Lastly, a condition called Chondromalacia Patellae occurs when there is wear and tear on the cartilage underneath the kneecap. This can cause clicks, pops, and pain.

Knee pain can make it difficult to walk, get out of a chair, walk up and downstairs, or participate in sports.

Peyton Physical Therapy is highly skilled at treating acute and chronic knee pain. We use a variety of techniques to help you regain your function and decrease pain.

Joint Mobilization leads to an improved Range of Motion and Strength!

Sustained rhythmic, oscillatory movements move the joints passively. They are performed to patient tolerance and should be pain-free if done correctly.

Joint mobilizations are graded on a scale from 1-4 and have the same, but safer and longer-lasting effect, than a chiropractic grade 5 (aka high velocity/thrust) manipulation. A recent study found that joint mobilization has an immediate improvement in the range of motion, muscle function, and strength.

It’s no surprise why the world’s top athletes keep a physical therapist on their team! You deserve the same level of care, so call our office today to schedule your appointment.

We Think Differently by utilizing Integrative Manual Therapy Techniques!

What sets us apart from others? To reach your goals, we mostly employ "hands-on tactics" that integrate Western and Eastern medicine philosophies to address the source of your pain and help you feel better.

Dr. Peyton is a Certified Cupping Therapy Practitioner and a Doctor of Physical Therapy, with over two decades of clinical experience and may incorporate cupping into your treatment session, if indicated.

This Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modality is used to address myofascial restrictions and muscle trigger points which cause pain and disrupt normal, pain-free movement.

So what is soft tissue mobilization? It is a treatment approach that involves addressing restrictions in the muscle, joints, ligaments, fascia and skin that restrict normal movement and cause pain.

At Peyton Physical Therapy, we use a variety of therapy modalities, in addition to cupping, to alleviate pain and improve the rehabilitation of soft tissue aches, pains, and injuries.

Soft tissue mobilization aims to increase flexibility/mobility, reduce pain, and remove any soft tissue limitations that are preventing your body from moving freely.
