How it all started
When the Covid-19 Pandemic hit, I decided to temporarily close my business “Sew Custom LLC” and begin a new mission to help our medical heroes in need. I wanted to find a way to bring our community together and to help give back. Originally I created a group “Sewing for our Northshore Community” On the group I posted sewing demos on how to repurpose items from old bed sheets, for example making surgical gowns from bed sheets, or how to make surgical caps or shoe covers from old tee shirts. It was so exciting to see people dig out their sewing machines. Some people had not used their machine in over 20 years. Our group has exploded!!! We have over 30 women in our group that sew and over a dozen non-sewers that help with the prep work. Most of the non-sewers want to learn to how to sew and I hope to one day teach them.
My dream is to develop sewing chapters in different areas around the world that is community driven to help with current crisis events or to help their local community of those in need. It could be from making blankets for the homeless, pillowcases for children’s hospitals, The Dress a Girl Foundation, Baby Blankets for the Pregnancy Crisis Centers, Garment repairs for nursing homes, War Veterans and more.
I think we could have a sewing revolution!
I want to bring the art of sewing back and all the wonderful benefits that are attached to it.
