March is National Kidney Month!

Did you know?
• 1 in 7 American adults has chronic kidney disease (CKD) — that’s about 35.5 million people.
• 9 out of 10 people with kidney disease don’t even know they have it (it’s often called a “silent” condition).
• Diabetes and high blood pressure are the top causes, but early detection and healthy habits can make a huge difference.
Our kidneys work tirelessly every day to filter waste, balance fluids, and keep us alive. This month (and always), let’s make kidney health count!

Take a moment to:
• Get your kidneys checked (simple blood & urine tests can catch issues early).
• Manage blood pressure, blood sugar, and stay hydrated.
• Eat kidney-friendly: more fruits/veggies, less salt & processed foods.
• Spread the word — share this post to help someone you love!

Your kidneys count — every day, in every way.

As students head back to the classroom, it is a great time to talk to kids about the dangers of drug misuse. Parents can have a big impact by talking to their kids about drugs, but not all age groups respond in the same way. New guidance walks parents through having conversations with kids from preschool to college age.

Elementary school students may respond to conversations about “good drugs” versus “bad drugs.” It is more beneficial for parents of high school students to know what drugs are trending and ask their teenagers about drug issues at school, in friends’ homes, and in social settings. It is also crucial to emphasize the dangers of buying pills or medication through social media platforms.

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month 💙

As a healthcare professional, I want to take a moment to raise awareness about scoliosis, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide—especially adolescents.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that can range from mild to severe. Early detection is key to effective treatment and preventing long-term complications. Watch for signs like:
✅ Uneven shoulders
✅ One hip higher than the other
✅ A visible curve in the spine
✅ Clothes not fitting evenly

If you or your child notice any of these symptoms, don’t hesitate to schedule an evaluation. Screening, monitoring, and, if needed, early intervention can make all the difference.

Let’s work together to spread awareness and support those living with scoliosis. 💪

☀️ Summer Heat Is Here – Stay Safe & Healthy! ☀️
As temperatures rise, so does the risk for heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke — especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions.

👩‍⚕️ Here are a few tips from your local primary care team to help you stay cool and healthy this summer:

✅ Hydrate often – Drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine.
✅ Dress smart – Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes.
✅ Stay indoors during peak heat – Try to limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
✅ Never leave kids or pets in the car – Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
✅ Know the signs of heat exhaustion – Dizziness, headache, nausea, and heavy sweating are all warning signs.

🌡️ If you or a loved one feels faint, confused, or stops sweating — seek medical attention immediately.

Have questions about how the heat may affect your health or medications? I’m here to help – don’t hesitate to reach out!

Stay safe & enjoy your summer,
Cassie Guste

We all love a beautiful sunny spring day but remember to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun!

Did you know that just ONE blistering sunburn can double your risk of melanoma?
Whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or even snowy — UV rays are still working overtime.

Here’s how to protect your skin every day:
• Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher (yes, even in winter!)
• Reapply every 2 hours — more if you’re swimming or sweating
• Don’t forget ears, lips, neck, and hands!
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat & UV-blocking sunglasses
• Avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Your skin is your body’s largest organ — treat it with love, not sun damage.
Early protection = lifelong prevention.

Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? As a working mom with 2 busy kids I feel like every month is stress awareness month in our house!

Mental health can positively or negatively impact your physical health and risk factors for heart disease and stroke, according to “Psychological Health, Well-Being, and the Mind-Heart-Body Connection,” a scientific statement in the American Heart Association journal Circulation.

Stress may contribute to poor health behaviors linked to increased risk for heart disease and stroke, such as:
Smoking
Overeating
Lack of physical activity
Unhealthy diet
Being overweight
Not taking medications as prescribed

This month focus on ways you can manage the stress in your life!

Exercise, healthy eating, getting restorative sleep, spending time in nature, carving out time
For hobbies! How do you deal with stress?
