Because when you feel safe, you exude it, and you become their harbor... the very thing your child needs to regulate back into balance. Create a safe container for them by first creating safety within.

Parenting tip: tolerating our children's big feelings happens when we can tolerate our own first. Start small and sit with it, and your capacity will grow. So that tears and conflict stop becoming the default outcome.

This is a temporary moment... breathe.

There is always a solution.

You both always get through it.

This moment will pass.

You are not a failure.

You are not out of control.

There is just a misunderstanding.

Loving kindness and forgiveness is medicine for the painful shame, guilt, or regret we beat ourselves up with when we shout or threaten and don't show up for our kids with the patience we are longing for.

Ironically, we can access more patience when we are patient and loving with ourselves.

Parent yourself with the loving kindness that you want to parent your kids with. Because you can only give what you have.

What if respect was built through keeping your word, following through, your credibility, your integrity, instead of using force, manipulation, coersion, or overpowering them?

Because the former rests on a reverence for self. While underneath the latter is one's own fear and insecurity, unresolved; one's own desire for self-respect, unfulfilled.

If you find yourself wanting to instill fear in your kids, breathe and make peace with the part of you that you wish to keep from your kids.

Ironically, it is in this softening that you can build the sturdy foundation for deep mutual respect with your children.

I'm defiant. Ask anyone in my family 🤭.

As a kid, I refused help and instruction. But I just wanted power.

As an adult, I sometimes refuse to surrender when I can't handle it all. But I just want to have control.

And as a mama, the more resistance I have, the harder the time we have. But I just want things to be a certain way so that I can feel good enough as a parent.

When I believe my kid is trying to make me miserable, is doing this TO me, is preventing me from doing what I need to do... my behaviors are reactive, serious, trying to cut corners.

When I believe that my kid is resilient, resourceful, good, and that anything is possible... my behaviors are involvement, curiosity, playful, I WANT to see her through because I'm excited for what we can do together.

Why is this important? Because choosing the good beliefs makes it possible for your kid to look back as an adult and say that you stayed connected with them during their most difficult moments.

I miss being messy, don't you?

Not the mess I live in that others make. But making my own mess.

I live in a state of trying to keep everything tidy or else everything will fall apart and I won't know how to put it all back together.

I want that kind of freedom. To dig my hands in food with abandon like my daughter does. To beat on something. To be wild, pick flowers, roll in the grass, dance like a fool.

The thing is, I know what kids want and need. And playing at this level floods kids with safety, oxytocin, security, jubilance, creativity, possibility... pure elation.

And the behavior that follows? Not the kind we work so hard to avoid. It's cooperation, altruism, problem-solving, and so much more.

I say let the messy out.
