🥳 It's Carmelo's FIRST Birthday!!⠀

⁉️ What are some “things to look for” at Age 1?!⠀

■ Receptive Language: ⠀

• Looks towards sounds, responds to name, follows a point⠀

• Responds to simple words, (e.g., "No," "Want more")⠀

• Engages in peek-a-boo, songs, and stories ⠀

■ Expressive Language:⠀

• Babbling (e.g., "babababa") & imitates sounds⠀

• Uses sounds and gestures to gain attention⠀

• Shows objects⠀

• Says 1-2 words (e.g., mama, dada, uh oh)⠀

🤔 How can YOU help? 👍🏼⠀

• Respond and imitate their sounds!⠀
• Laugh with your baby!⠀
• Describe what you are doing!⠀
• Teach animal sounds and simple actions (e.g., waving, clapping)!⠀
• READ to your child every day!⠀
• MODEL! MODEL! MODEL!⠀
• HAVE FUN!⠀

📚 WHY is reading and exploring books so important for promoting pediatric speech and language? ⠀

📚 Children need to hear many words often. Reading to your child often exposes them to more words and builds their vocabulary. ⠀

📚 Children learn words when they are interested. Books motivate children to communicate and, when parents respond to what the child is interested in, it helps children learn new words.⠀

📚 Reading builds vocabulary and meaning. Children learn what words mean when parents read with them and explain what new words mean while pointing to the pictures. ⠀

📚 Vocabulary and grammar are learned together. Children need to hear new words in grammatically correct sentences in order to learn language efficiently. Reading books with your child exposes them to new words used in grammatical sentences.⠀

📚 Positive, extended conversations support cognitive and social development. When parents read with their child this promotes a positive interaction and shared conversation. ⠀

🙌 Parents, I know you’re busy (TRUST me 😅)⠀

💯 But it is critical to your child’s speech and language development to carve out some quiet time to listen and read. ⠀

💫 Remember, every child deserves a voice! ⠀⠀

🗣 SLP Tips for 0-2 years old! Try doing the following to develop your young child’s communication skills:⠀

👋🏼 Waving⠀
👉 Pointing⠀
🗣 Annunciating sounds like “ba, ma, da”⠀
🤪 Respond to laughter and faces⠀
📚 Read to them⠀
‼️ And there’s so much more!⠀

⁉️ How can a pediatric SLP help? First, don’t be afraid to ask for help! ⠀

💯 Many issues are common and improvable. A pediatric SLP will work with children to help them annunciate and articulate (the ability to move the tongue, jaw, lips, and palate). This can be anything from speech exercises with touch cues to observing and correcting habits during play. You will be amazed at how much an SLP can do! ⠀

🗣 Modeling Pronouns! Instead of saying:⠀

👦🏻 “Johnny wants milk” to acknowledge Johnny, who just said something similar…⠀

👍🏼Say: “I want milk.”⠀

✅ Model the correct pronoun, “I.”⠀

✅ Model EXACTLY what your child should say!⠀

❌ Do NOT require your child to repeat you…⠀

🙌🏼 Each modeled production is NOT a test but a teachable moment! ⠀

👌🏼Just simply model the correct pronoun during any and all chances throughout the day. ⠀

💯 Modeling is the BEST form of teaching for our little ones learning to produce language! ⠀

✅ DO say- “tell me” or “show me”⠀

❌ DON’T say- “use your words”⠀

💯 Sometimes kids do not have the words to use!⠀

💯 Sometimes kids have words but they are not able to access them because they are under stress!⠀

🗣 Most importantly, recognize that communication is so much MORE than words! ⠀

🗣 When we say “tell me” or “show me” we are giving children a chance to express themselves how they know in that moment. ⠀

🗣 Accept and encourage all communication (e.g., gestures, pointing, single words, etc.)!⠀

💡If a child is having trouble expressing themselves, you may provide them with TIME and sentence starters. This is a great way to help them while being respectful!⠀

Sentence starters can be:⠀
■ “I want ____”⠀
■ “I need ____”⠀
■ “I have ____”⠀
■ “I feel _____”⠀

🥰 Helping them through the moment of difficulty accessing words with these tips can make communication a more enjoyable and rewarding learning experience for you and your child! ⠀

🎥👶🏽 “BOO‼️” 👻 Watch Carmelo (8 months) as he tries and produces the CV (consonant vowel) syllable shape with one of the early 8 speech sounds, /b/. ⠀

8️⃣ For those who have been following us, we mentioned the “early 8” in a previous post! ⠀

🔑 Keys to practice 🗣:⠀

☝️Modeling early sounds with touch cues and exaggerated movements… 👩🏻 👧🏽 Model, model, model!⠀

👏 Praise ALL attempts!⠀

😊 No expectations, keep it simple!

🤯 Notice the efforts as Melo positions his mouth and lips. This stuff really works! ⠀
