Last month we learned that there is a cost for donor milk due to processing that is done to the milk before it can be sent out to our tinniest Hoosiers, but what does mean exactly?

After a careful intake process, milk is weighed, recorded by your Donor ID and kept frozen. Once in the lab, milk is defrosted, nutritionally analyzed, and pooled with milk from up to four other donors. Milk is portioned into specialty bottles, sealed, and labeled with a tracking bar code before being pasteurized to kill any harmful bacteria. Pasteurized milk is stored in a walk-in freezer, while one bottle is sent offsite for a final microbiological test. After the results are in, frozen pasteurized donor milk is sent to tiny tummies in the hospital and at home!

Tune in here each month, as we highlight some lesser-known facts and answer commonly asked questions about the donation process!

Huge shout out to our very own nursing student, Lacey Connover! We’re so proud to work alongside the Pre-Nursing CTE Program and to see future nurses inspiring the next generation!

PRE-NURSING STUDENT READERS

Yesterday, Lacey Connover and Brooklyn Crew, visited Hose Elementary to educate the students about Pre-Nursing. They read the story "My Mommy is a Nurse", played "Pin the Band Aid on the Boo Boo", and helped students craft their own stethoscopes. It was a great time!

One question that we frequently receive is, "If donor milk is free to the milk bank, why is there a fee for families to purchase it?"

Providing safe donor milk to babies in need requires strict adherence to safety guidelines and protocols developed by the Human Milk Bank Association of North American (HMBANA). Hospitals pay a processing fee that helps offset the cost of these layers of safety.

We believe that every baby should have access to safe human milk! For babies at home with a medical need for Pasteurized Donor Human Milk, The Milk Bank offers the Medical Relief Fund, a sliding scale assistance program meant to remove financial barriers. For more information, visit https://www.themilkbank.org/medical-relief-fund/ .

We all know that breastfeeding has many benefits to both mom and baby, but did you know that breastfeeding for at least two months has been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS by as much as 50%? Research has also shown that the risk of SIDS decreases even more the longer you breastfeed. If you or someone you know would like extra support and guidance for breastfeeding, reach out to your child's doctor for connection to a lactation consultant. This is almost always covered by your child's insurance! Visit http://safetosleep.nichd.nihgov to learn more about safe sleep for your little one.

The ABC's of safe infant sleep teach us to never use blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, or loose bedding, but did you know that this also includes items that go UNDER baby? So many items NOT approved for safe sleep are on the market these days and sometimes it's hard to tell if an item poses a risk. Items such as infant sleep positioners and wedges are NOT considered safe for infant sleep. If you have concerns related to safest sleep environment for your baby, always double check with your child's doctor!
