𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁: Wild Mushroom Poisoning Risk

This message is important for Del Norte County. Recent rain and wet weather can lead to more mushroom growth in forested areas, including some that are very toxic.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴
• CDPH has reported an ongoing outbreak of amatoxin poisoning linked to wild, foraged mushrooms, including Death Cap mushrooms
• Between November 18, 2025 and January 6, 2026, California Poison Control identified 35 hospitalized cases
• This outbreak has resulted in three adult deaths and three liver transplants
• People affected range from 19 months to 67 years
• Cases have been treated in Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sonoma counties
• Most cases are in the Monterey area and the San Francisco Bay Area, but Death Cap mushrooms can be found across California, especially near oaks, other hardwoods, and some pines
• Some mushrooms were collected from public places, including county, city, and national park lands

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
• Death Cap mushrooms are easily confused with safe lookalike mushrooms
• Symptoms can start 6 to 24 hours after eating toxic mushrooms
• Early symptoms can include watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dehydration
• Symptoms may improve after a day, but serious to fatal liver damage can still develop 48 to 96 hours later
• Treatment is more difficult once symptoms start, so it is important to get help right away

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲
• Do not eat mushrooms you find outside unless you are 100 percent sure what they are
• Buy mushrooms from a grocery store or vendor
• Be careful with mushrooms shared from foraging
• Keep kids and pets away from wild mushrooms
• Cooking, boiling, freezing, or drying does not make poisonous mushrooms safe

Lab research shows that lemon eucalyptus essential oil can strongly fight several harmful bacteria—including strains often linked to food contamination and infections.

What’s especially notable is that its antibacterial strength in these tests was similar to gentamicin, a commonly used antibiotic.

Researchers also looked at how it works and found that lemon eucalyptus oil:
• Disrupts bacterial cell walls
• Interferes with how bacteria “communicate” with each other
• Helps prevent bacteria from forming protective biofilms

In simple terms: it doesn’t just slow bacteria down—it makes it harder for them to survive and organize. This study is a great example of how plant chemistry continues to show real promise in modern science.
