✨ Something a lot of people don’t know about ADHD is that children often grow and mature on a slightly different timeline than their peers. While they might be the same age on paper, emotionally and socially they can be about two to three years younger.

✨ So an 8-year-old with ADHD may act and interact more like a 5 or 6 year old. That’s not because they’re being immature or defiant, it’s because the parts of the brain responsible for things like emotional control, focus, and social understanding take a bit longer to develop.

✨ The beautiful part? These same kids often bring an unmatched sense of curiosity, creativity, and joy to the world around them. They tend to laugh easily, think outside the box, and remind everyone else how fun it can be to see life through a different lens.

✨ When we recognize this, we can respond with more patience and understanding. Growing differently isn’t falling behind, it’s simply following a unique rhythm, and that’s something to be celebrated.

Kindergarten requirements for 1954. Seeing this list makes it clear how far we have strayed from developmentally appropriate practices with our children. Forcing reading and writing in preschool is a new normal. Kindergarten today is like first or second grade when I was in school.

Let’s take a moment to remind our kids, teens, and families that mental health matters just as much as physical health.

You’re never alone and it’s always okay to ask for help. 💚

October is ADHD Awareness Month

At Exit 56 Therapy Group, we believe that understanding your child’s unique strengths is the first step to helping them thrive.

ADHD looks different for every child and adolescent. Some may have trouble staying focused, others may act before thinking, and some may appear unmotivated when in reality their brain just works differently. With the right support and understanding, children with ADHD can flourish at home, in school, and in life.

Psychological testing may be recommended when you notice:

➕ Difficulty staying focused or completing tasks
➕ Challenges with organization or time management
➕ Struggles with impulsivity or self-control
➕ Trouble following directions or managing emotions
➕ Academic performance that doesn’t match their potential

Testing helps uncover how your child learns, processes information, and manages attention, giving families and teachers the tools to support success.

ADHD is not a limitation, it’s a difference in how the brain works. With the right guidance, structure, and strategies, kids with ADHD can do incredible things.

📄 Is your child receiving the services outlined in their IEP?

✨ If the IEP team determined that a student needs a specific service to be successful, the school is responsible for providing it. Those services are not optional; they are owed to the student as part of what the team agreed was necessary for success.

✨ You have a right to know when and if your child is receiving their services. If they are not getting them as outlined in the IEP, you can request documentation of service delivery and ask how the school plans to make up the missed time.

✨ Compensatory services are designed to make up for services a student missed that were required in their IEP. These services can be provided after school hours, during school breaks, or even throughout the summer. Parents do not have to wait until summer to get that time made up—compensatory time should be provided in a way that meets the student’s needs as soon as possible.

Understanding your child’s needs is the first step toward helping them reach their full potential.

At Exit 56 Therapy Group, we provide comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational testing to identify each child’s unique strengths, challenges, and learning profile.

These evaluations can help answer important questions like:

➕ Why is my child struggling in school?
➕ Could this be ADHD, autism, or a learning difference?
➕ What supports or accommodations would help my child thrive?

Our licensed psychologists and psychometrists use evidence-based assessments to provide clear insight and actionable recommendations for home, school, and therapy settings.

Testing may include:

➕ Cognitive and academic evaluations
➕ Autism and ADHD assessments
➕ Behavioral and emotional screenings
➕ Gifted and IQ testing

Clarity brings confidence — and that’s where real progress begins
