- OT Tip: Color with broken crayons to improve grasp; incorporate movement breaks to support regulation

Today we are highlighting swinging for OT Month! 🎉

âś…Swinging stimulates the vestibular system (movement and balance) and helps children better process motion and changes in position.
âś…Swinging can be calming or alerting depending on the type and speed of movement (slower paced and linear input is calming; faster paced and spinning is more alerting).
âś…Slower paced and linear (back and forth) swinging can be very soothing and help reduce anxiety and overstimulation in children.
âś…Swinging assists with regulation for children who are both overstimulated or under-responsive; it can help maintain optimal arousal levels.
âś…Swinging can help improve attention and focus.
âś…Swinging can help build core strength, motor planning, and coordination.

Today for OT Month, we are highlighting stringing beads!

Benefits:
âś…Targets bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body to complete a task).
âś…Strengthens the small muscles in the hands needed for prewriting strokes, handwriting, dressing, and feeding.
âś…Helps develops a pincer grasp (pad of index and thumb).
âś…Targets eye-hand coordination skills.
âś…Targets Color identification and matching.

Pro tip: using a pipe cleaner is a good starting point and then progress to strings or yarn

We are kicking off celebrating OT Month with Ms. Hannah!

Hannah is an amazing COTA/L working in our clinics as well as the pool completing aquatic therapy sessions! 🎉

Get to know Hannah:
Favorite color: Pink
Favorite animal: Cat
Favorite sport: Football
Favorite food: pizza
Hobbies: She teaches dance classes on the weekends.
College: Saint Louis College of Health Careers and Missouri State University
Reason for getting into the field of OT: "I shadowed a pediatric occupational therapist and knew this is exactly what I wanted to do for a living- helping kids with their everyday activities!"
Favorite OT tip: if your child is struggling with a tripod grasp, have them hold and stabilize the cap of the marker against their palm with their pinky and ring fingers - this encourages the use of the thumb, middle finger, and index finger with grasping the marker!

We are wishing Ms. Victoria a very Happy Birthday! We hope you enjoy your day! 🎂🎉

We are jumping into April and celebrating Occupational Therapy Month! Throughout the month, we will be posting some of our favorite tips, activities, games, and equipment! Stay tuned. 🎉

Facts:
âś…Jumping provides proprioceptive input (input through joints and muscles), which can be calming and organizing for a child's nervous system.
âś…Jumping provides vestibular input (movement/balance), which can help a child feel more aware of their body in space.
âś…Jumping can be used to help regulate energy levels, can either alert or calm depending on the child.
âś…Jumping improves motor planning (a child figuring out how to move their body to complete a task) and helps build coordination between a child's upper and lower body.
âś…Jumping builds strength and endurance needed for daily activities.
âś…Jumping can be a great "reset" activity for a child who is dysregulated.
âś…Jumping can help improve attention and focus after a movement break.
