Are your pets are on your holiday gift list this year? Here are some suggestions from the AVMA.

"Even something as simple as a microchip can be a lifesaving gift if your pet is ever lost," said AVMA President Dr. Michael Bailey. "It's a gift that lasts a lifetime, and helps ensure you'll be reunited if the unthinkable happens." For more tips and resources, visit AVMA.org/holiday

If you're a pet parent, be careful which plants you use in your holiday decorations. Poinsettias are beautiful but can cause upset tummies and vomiting if ingested. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and yew can be extremely dangerous and may even cause death. Pet safe plants include Christmas cactus, prayer plants, orchids, roses and Boston ferns.

Many of us use scented candles as a way to make these long, cold nights more cozy, but some candles can be harmful to your pets. Cats and dogs have a much more acute sense of smell than humans and that makes them sensitive to the scents, oils and chemicals used in candles. Smoke from inexpensive candles can also cause problems. There are pet-friendly candles available made from natural, non-toxic waxes like soy, coconut, or beeswax instead of paraffin. They also use clean-burning, lead-free cotton or wood wicks and are fragranced with pet-friendly fragrances. If you burn candles and your pets cough, sneeze or have watery eyes, it may be time to change your candles.

Thinking of getting a kitten or puppy for Christmas? That's wonderful! Here are some things to consider:
> Having an animal is a long-term commitment of 15-20 years.
> Can your lifestyle accommodate the care of an animal?
> Do you have time for training, exercise and socialization?
> Can you afford the expenses that come with having an animal, like food and veterinary care?
> Does everyone in your home want an animal?

Since the holidays are chaotic, it's best not to make the puppy or kitten a surprise. Let everyone in your home be part of the decision. Remember, your new companion is not a toy, but a living animal that can't be returned if you don't like it. And, of course, schedule your new puppy or kitten appointment with Baker Animal Hospital to ensure it is healthy and happy.
