Mike Aulie, a lifetime resident of the C-I area, retired professional photographer, and former Mayor of Deerwood, has been writing a series of Crosby-Ironton Courier guest columns about the upcoming 2024 operating levy referendum.

We thought we'd share some of his answers to Frequently Asked Questions here for local residents to read and share.
_______________________________________________

When last year’s request for an operating levy failed by 36 votes, the school board was forced to make $718,000 in cuts for the current school year that included:

-Kindergarten section eliminated
-Cres and high school subscriptions reduced
-High school supply budget reduced
-Pep band performances outside of school day eliminated
-Concerts outside of the school day eliminated
-Schoology student information system eliminated
-Library books new purchases eliminated
-Ranger Made supply budget reduced
-MN Rural Education Association (MREA) dues eliminated
-Second grade section eliminated
-Elementary math instructional coach eliminated
-Elementary social emotional learning reduced
-Modification of high school foreign language
-Sports supply budget reduction
-Sports transportation reduction
-Junior high coaches reduced number
-Fees added to participate in knowledge bowl and robotics
-Sports rotation of uniforms extended from four years to five years
-Sports participation fee cap eliminated
-Sports entry fees for select activities no longer paid by the school district
- Sports athletic trainer base costs reduced

If the operating levy fails again this year, the school board will be facing an additional one million dollars in cuts for the next school year on top of the cuts already made for this year. The new cuts for the 2025-2026 school year could lead to:

- Increased classroom sizes across all grade levels as staff reductions take effect.
- Reduced vocational and technical education and fewer classes that prepare students for college.
- Reduced academic and mental health support for students.
- Reduced programming and extracurricular opportunities for students of all ages.
- Delayed investments in curriculum, technology, and resources that support student learning.

If voters approve this year’s levy referendum, not only will these cuts be avoided, but some of the cuts made for this school year will be reversed, and the school district will be financially stable for the next 10 years.
