It is Movement Monday, and this week we are diving into one of the most important questions in Parkinson's care: why does movement matter? 💜🚶

For those living with Parkinson's disease, staying active is about so much more than fitness. Regular movement can help reduce stiffness, improve balance and coordination, support mental and emotional wellbeing, and make a meaningful difference in overall quality of life.

Not all fats are created equal. Some fats help support heart and brain health, while others are best enjoyed in moderation. Understanding the difference can make everyday food choices easier. 🫒💜

Good fats are typically unsaturated fats. These fats can help support cholesterol levels, brain function, and overall heart health. You’ll often find them in foods like:
• Avocados
• Olive oil and canola oil
• Nuts and seeds
• Fatty fishlike salmon and tuna

Bad fats are usually saturated or trans fats. Eating too much of these fats may increase the risk of heart health concerns, so they are best limited when possible. Common sources include:
• Fried foods
• Processed snacks
• Baked goods made with shortening
• Fast food meals and processed meats

Choosing more good fats and limiting bad fats is one simple way to support healthy aging through nutrition.

In recognition of Brain Awareness Week, it’s a great time to highlight foods that support brain health at every age. 🧠💜

Here are a few brain-healthy foods to keep in mind:
• Fatty fish like salmon and tuna
• Leafy greens such as spinach and kale
• Berries, especially blueberries and strawberries
• Nuts and seeds like walnuts and flaxseed
• Whole grains that support steady energy
• Olive oil for healthy fats

Pairing balanced nutrition with other healthy habits can help support memory, focus, and overall brain wellness as we age.

Our Story

Senior Helpers of Northwest Indiana takes great pride in being a part of the community and helping to improve the lives of senior citizens. We are committed to providing quality, in home care for seniors who wish to maintain their independence. Our owner, Mike Stuckert, was born and raised in Northwest Indiana and through personal experiences with his own mother; saw the need for senior care services in the area. Mike’s personal experiences have led us to assemble a team of caring, experienced, and skilled professionals to help your loved one enjoy an independent lifestyle. We offer a comprehensive list of companionship services including: meal preparation, transportation, errand running, light housekeeping, laundry, linen changing, and medication reminders. In addition, we offer personal care services performed by a Certified Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide. Personal care services include assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, and other activities of daily living. Many of our caregivers are also experienced and trained in caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Senior Helpers understands the importance of finding the appropriate care for your loved one so we pay special attention in selecting and retaining our caregivers. Our caregivers are not only experienced trained professionals, but they are also employees of Senior Helpers. All of our caregivers have passed our extensive screening process that includes personal and employment reference checks, as well as criminal background checks. All of our caregivers are also fully insured, bonded, and work under the supervision of our staff nurse. Furthermore, Senior Helpers understands the importance of continuing education. Our caregivers receive on-going training through Senior Helpers University, an educational program which allows caregivers to develop and enhance their care giving skills. Whether we provide care 3 hours per day or 24/7, we create meaningful relationships between seniors and their caregivers and we help restore quality time between seniors and their family members. It would be our privilege to become part of your family in caring for your loved one. Contact us today to set up a complimentary care assessment interview. Senior Helpers is licensed by the State of Indiana as a Personal Services Agency.
