🎖 His Final Wish Was to Wear His MASH Uniform — Harry Morgan’s Goodbye Broke Everyone’s Heart 💔
In the final months of his life, Harry Morgan — the man millions knew as Colonel Sherman T. Potter — spoke softly to his family about one last wish.
He didn’t ask for fame, or headlines, or grand goodbyes.
He simply said,
“When I go, I’d like to wear the uniform one last time.”
That olive-green MAS*H jacket had become more than just a costume — it was a symbol of everything Harry stood for: leadership, honor, and quiet kindness. He kept it neatly folded in his closet for years, long after the show ended. To him, Colonel Potter wasn’t a role — he was a reflection of the man Harry hoped to be.
When MASH* ended in 1983, Harry cried openly at the wrap conference. “I don’t know if MAS*H made me a better actor,” he said through tears, “but I know it made me a better human being.” And everyone who worked with him knew that was true.
So, when his time came in December 2011, his family did exactly as he’d asked.
They gently placed that familiar Army jacket over him — clean, pressed, and proud. Inside the casket, they tucked two photographs:
📸 One of the entire MASH* family, smiling between takes — the friends who had shared his laughter, his long nights, and his best years.
🐴 And another of Sophie, the horse who had stood beside him both on screen and in life.
Those who knew him say it was the perfect farewell — a soldier’s dignity, an artist’s heart, and a friend’s love.
Harry Morgan didn’t just play Colonel Potter. He became him — the father figure who led with compassion instead of command, who healed not just wounds, but hearts.
Even now, when fans rewatch MASH* and see that calm, steady gaze, it still feels like he’s there — reminding us that strength can be gentle, and kindness can be the greatest form of courage.
🕊 Rest in peace, Harry Morgan (1915–2011).
You led the 4077th with heart, humor, and honor — and you’ll always be our Colonel Potter.
