In an argument, what people really want to know is do I really matter to you?

02/16/2026

I want you to think about a rosebush for a minute.

A rosebush doesn't just produce roses. It produces buds—lots of them. Far more than it can actually sustain.

If you let every bud try to become a rose, you won't get a bush full of beautiful flowers. You'll get a bush full of mediocre ones. None of them will get the energy they need to fully bloom.

That's why gardeners prune. They cut away the good buds so the best ones can thrive.

Your life works the same way.

You're producing more than you can sustain. More commitments, more relationships, more obligations.

Some of them are good. But good isn't the same as best. And when you try to keep everything alive, nothing gets the energy it needs.

The problem is, most of us were never taught to think like gardeners. We think pruning is a failure. We think cutting something away means we've given up, that something is wrong.

But pruning isn't giving up. Pruning is how growth happens.

There's something in your life right now that a wise gardener would have cut a long time ago. You know what it is. You've just been afraid to make the cut.

Good question to evaluate your relationships: Do you NEED the other person to change for you to be okay?

01/28/2026

In her book The Language of Letting Go, Melody Beattie writes:

“If we weren’t trying to control whether a person liked us or her reaction to us, what would we do differently?

If we weren’t trying to control the course of a relationship, what would we do differently?

If we weren’t trying to control another person’s behavior, how would we think, feel, speak, and behave differently than we do now?

What haven’t we been letting ourselves do while hoping that self-denial would influence a particular situation or person?

When people open their heart to their partner they report feeling closer, and a mood boost. Journaling together allows a quiet moment to look inside to what you feel on a deeper level and share it. You are then a step ahead and know what your partner is feeling! It's like a weather alert 😉 or as one person put it, when your partner is ticked off, you will be tipped off as to what they are feeling underneath their anger which allows for better results when you meet up later!

"How are you doing?" Sometimes it's just easier to say, "I'm fine." The best relationships though can be honest. You may not know what to say at the moment, but having your partner reach out and asking you how you're really doing, and you taking the time to think about it before you respond can make a difference. It helps to write it down for them to read, and you can reach beyond the surface level communication to deeper and genuine responses from your partner.

Seeking couples therapy is a sign of health, not dysfunction. Sadly, only 19% of couples seek help – and of those that do, couples therapy has an 85% success rate. In other words, the majority of couples who attend evidence-based couples therapy regain a happy, healthy relationship, with resources and tools to help them maintain it for years to come. Finding a Gottman-trained therapist who specializes exclusively in couples therapy could be the best investment you will ever make in your relationship.
