He won't even be 25 when the soap could hit the market. Most medical students haven't graduated by then.

Heman Bekele, a 15 year old student from Fairfax, Virginia, was named TIME's 2024 Kid of the Year for developing a low cost soap designed to treat and prevent skin cancer. The soap uses lipid based nanoparticles to deliver imiquimod, an existing cancer fighting compound, through the skin. Bekele began developing the prototype in his family's kitchen at age 14 before winning the 3M Young Scientist Challenge and a $25,000 prize.

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Bekele moved to the U.S. at age four. He has said the idea came from watching laborers in Ethiopia work long hours under the sun with no protection and no access to affordable treatment. Skin cancer treatment in the U.S. averages around $40,000. His soap prototype could cost under $10 per pack. He is now testing the soap at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health alongside molecular biologist Vito Rebecca.

Full FDA approval and clinical trials could take up to a decade, but Bekele will still be only 25 when that process is complete.
