Concussions aren’t just “a bump on the head”. They impact the entire brain and body, and no two are the same.

In this blog, we break down what concussion testing & management actually looks like—from baseline testing (before injury) to sideline screening, recovery timelines, and safe return-to-sport strategies. You’ll also learn why symptoms can be so varied (think dizziness, brain fog, vision issues, and more) and why rushing back too soon can delay healing or increase risk of re-injury.

Most importantly, we highlight how specialized physical therapy plays a key role in guiding recovery and getting athletes (and everyday individuals) back to life safely.

While it is encouraging when concussion symptoms resolve within one week, physiological healing takes much longer.

Recovery Timeline: The brain typically requires 22 to 30 days on average to fully recover from a concussion.

Risks of Early Return: Resuming full-contact sports only one week after an injury is dangerous because the individual is still highly susceptible to a second injury during this healing window.

To safely resume playing, one must complete specific programs in the following order:
A full return-to-learn or return-to-work program.
A structured return-to-sport program.

Joining an adult rec league this Spring?

It may feel “just for fun,” but your body still needs to be ready for the demands of the sport. Sudden jumping, reaching, quick cuts, and powerful swings can add up quickly (especially if you’re only playing once or twice a week.)

The fix? Strength training!

Even 1–2 days per week can help reduce injury risk and keep you playing longer.

Want help building a plan for your sport? A physical therapist can help you train smarter. https://smithptplus.com/visit-appointment/
