Joseph Reuss was a physician who established a pharmacy said to be Texas’ oldest continually operating drugstore.

Reuss started his pharmacy in 1845 in Indianola, then a busy port city through which thousands of his fellow German immigrants entered Texas. He opened a second location in Cuero.

After one of Indianola’s major hurricanes, Reuss relocated to Cuero as a home base. He upgraded his one-story wooden shop to a two-story brick building; the first floor housed the pharmacy and the second floor was his medical practice. Joseph’s sons Oscar, August, and Joseph H. all carried on the family business.

The Pharmacy and Medical Museum of Texas in Cuero tells stories of this and other local pharmacies. The original wall cabinets, display counters, and preparation bench remain, stocked with artifacts from more than 100 years of pharmacy history.

A different location of Reuss Pharmacy, four blocks away, is still open.
