The earliest examples of obituaries or death notices date back to early Roman times. During the civil war period, obituaries became an important way to monitor family connections and keep track of the living and the dead. Obituaries had always been somewhat of a biography, most often brief. In recent years, obituaries have become more detailed and used as a telling of one’s life story. (See below for an article on the history of obituaries to learn more.)

Why have we culturally shifted in favor of writing detailed obituaries?

The first shift was seen with the introduction of printed materials in 1439. As limitations on space gradually disappeared, obituaries were given more room to tell a story. With easier access and the ability to share widely, they now live on through digital links and printed keepsakes. Obituaries now span far beyond small communities connecting friends, family, and acquaintances across states and countries.

Conversely, a well-written obituary does more than announce a passing. In modern times, an obituary serves as a form of memorialization. It captures small details that mattered; roles someone played, people they loved, passions that shaped their days. For many families, an obituary becomes a written place to return to, long after the service is over. They are read by grandchildren who were too young to remember and friends who lost touch. In that way, an obituary becomes a biography that honors not just a life, but the meaning behind it.

At Moss Service Funeral Home, we are honored to guide you through the details that make the care for your loved one personalized.

Funerals have adopted a new connotation in recent years, people are viewing funerals less and less as a time of mourning, and more as a celebration of life. How can you make the most of a celebration of life funeral service?

More often than not, ideas for memorializing someone are no more than passing thoughts- a video you may have seen, a random idea. When the time comes, there are typically higher priorities. Planning ahead allows those personal touches to be thoughtfully included in a service. These details may seem simple, but they often become the parts attendees hold onto most. They turn a service into a reflection of who someone truly was, not just a moment of goodbye.

Have you thought of ways you would like your loved ones to celebrate your life?
Here are some memorialization options to consider:

-Take-home favors such as custom coins, bookmarks or ornaments
- Recipe cards featuring a family dish
-A table showcasing hobbies such as quilts, tools, books, musical instruments
-A medal display or service history for veterans
-Seed packets or small plants
-A sharable playlist of favorite songs or hymns
-A place to write down and submit memories (such as a box and pens/paper)

At Moss Service Funeral Home we will work with you to create a meaningful reflection of your loved one’s life well lived. To discuss your options, visit mossservicefh.com or call us at (256)734-1821.

Our Story

Moss Service Funeral Home was founded in 1882 by Christopher Schueing, who was Cullman’s first embalmer. He was succeeded in the business by his son, Chris Schueing, and his son, Harry Schueing. At the time, the business was called C.C. Schueing and Son Funeral Home.

J. Grady Moss moved to Cullman from Tuscumbia in 1933 and worked at the funeral home until Harry retired and Grady bought the funeral home. He operated the business as Moss-Schueing Funeral Home until 1938, when he changed the name to Moss Service Funeral home.

Grady often said, “I not only think, but know, that the people of Cullman and Cullman County and the surrounding counties are wonderful people, and they deserve the very best in funeral home facilities for caring for their departed loved ones. It is my desire and intention, Lord being willing, to give these fine people just that.”

That desire and intention still stands. The entire team at Moss Service—many of whom have served families here for decades—embodies those high standards of service and care for the community to this day.
