👵👴 Aging is the most common cause for developing cataracts.

But did you know that other people may also be at risk due to other contributing factors?

These other contributing factors may put you at risk:
👁️ Certain medications (eye or systemic)
👁️ Chronic diseases (especially diabetes)
👁️ History of eye surgery or laser
👁️ Some genetic diseases
👁️ Eye inflammation from blows or eye diseases
👁️ Exposing yourself too much to the sun without protection

While cataract presents itself with symptoms, the only way to diagnose it is through an ophthalmological exam.

Don't be in the dark. 🕶

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which pressure builds up inside the eyeball and causes damage to the optic nerve. 👀

💡 Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma. If you suffer from OAG, there's a good chance you inherited the disease.

If you have a family member suffering from glaucoma, understanding what glaucoma is, where it occurs, and how serious it is can make all the difference in your ability to manage risk, and lower your chances of getting the disease and treat symptoms once they develop.

😢 Some severe cases of dry eyes need more than artificial tears for its treatment. In some cases, punctal plugs may be placed to prevent the tearduct from leaking. They work by blocking the tear drainage channel that drains the liquid from the ocular surface, making eyes keep their moisture longer.

Believe it or not, installing punctal plugs isn't an invasive procedure, and can be done in minutes!

Two types of Punctal Plugs are the following:

👁️ Temporary punctal plugs are made of a material that gradually breaks down and is absorbed by the body. These typically last anywhere from weeks to months in the eye.

👁️ Semi-permanent. They are made from longer-lasting medical-grade plastic and can stay in the eye for several years.

Want to know if you're viable for using punctal plugs as an option for dry eyes?

🙋‍♀️ Question: CAN GLAUCOMA BE OPERATED ON?

💡 Answer: GLAUCOMA as such cannot be operated on, but there are several procedures to LOWER INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE and help stop the disease.

There are different procedures depending on the type and severity of glaucoma:
📌 Non-invasive (LASER).
📌 Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).
📌 Filtration surgery (through drainage device and trabeculectomy).

Considering these procedures as your option will depend on the type of glaucoma you have.

In early stages, these procedures can help you stop the glaucoma drops completely and in advanced stages, can help preserve your vision.

Avoid head-down positions.

It's good to know that there are some exercises that could lead to the worsening of glaucoma. Some people also have a tendency to place their head below their heart level, doing some form of exercise is one of the places that has increased the risk of developing serious conditions like glaucoma.

We should always be careful in what we tend to do and should always look if it will be helpful for the body in case of sickness.

Eyedrop medicines are helpful in treating glaucoma.

It is extremely important to use glaucoma eyedrops exactly as an ophthalmologist tells you to. Going against the advice of your doctor may result in vision loss, or other side effects.

There are several types of glaucoma eyedrops. Your ophthalmologist may have you take more than one of the following glaucoma eyedrop medicines.

🔎 Alpha Agonists, Beta Blockers, Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors work by reducing the amount of fluid your eye produces.
🔎 Miotics make your pupil constrict (get smaller), increasing the amount of fluid that drains out of the eye.
🔎 Prostaglandin Analogs work by increasing the drainage of fluid out of your eye.

Each of these glaucoma eyedrops have their own side effects. Because of the nature of these eyedrops, prescription is important before using any of these eyedrops. Consult an eye doctor to know which one is best for you, and how to administer its dosage.

Eating a diet high in leafy green vegetables, colored fruits and berries is a natural way to promote eye health.

That's because these foods are rich in nutrients essential for healthy vision and contribute to the overall health of tissues, including your eyes.

Spinach and broccoli, carrots and tomatoes, blueberries and cabbage. These fruits, vegetables, and berries are high in vitamins A and C, which help your eyes get the nutrients they need.

The best part is that they're easy to eat - just stuff a few handfuls in your mouth whenever you get hungry.

Because chronic forms of glaucoma can destroy vision before any signs or symptoms are apparent, be aware of these risk factors.

It's important to see an eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year, even if you don't have any symptoms.

Many of the people we worked with in the past ask if they can still live a normal life despite being diagnosed with glaucoma...

The answer is yes. With treatments and regular checkups, glaucoma can be controlled enough to completely or nearly completely preserve vision. But if it is not diagnosed and treated in the early stages, you may lose a significant amount of your peripheral, or side vision.

If you're diagnosed with glaucoma, you will need to see an eye doctor for regular checkups for the rest of your life.
