UPDATE: Real feelings pre-surgery… scared AF. I made a panic call to my BFF when it hit me just how scared I actually was minutes before they brought me into the operating room.

After some gentle reassurance and a good cry allowing those feelings move through me, I landed on the mantra, “My body is resilient.” This reminded me that whatever happens, my body is strong and capable of healing.

The post-op report showed the fibroid was 9 cm. One of my biggest fears was, what if they find a mess of other stuff going on in there when they look inside? I had specifically asked the surgeon to check for endo because there is a high rate of comorbidity, and SILENT ENDO is more common than we know! Turns out, a lesion was in fact found on my left uterosacral ligament, and removed.

The uterosacral ligament is the most common location for deep infiltrating endometriosis (a specific type of endometriosis). The endometrial cells are found well below the tissue that lines the pelvic cavity (peritoneum).

Of course, many new questions come to mind, one of the most important being, how do we prevent and monitor new growths? For now, I’m free of this large fibroid and that feels like a win.

Feeling ready. Ready to let go of the old and create space for the new.

My laparoscopic myomectomy is scheduled today in a few hours to have two fibroids remove from my uterus at Cedars. Off to a tricky start when my pre-scheduled Uber “could not find any drivers” 🤦🏻‍♀️ but here we are, on my way with mom by my side.

Wish I could play you the K-Pop soundtrack that Yeon Soo has us vibing to in the Lyft, but this will have to do.

As I prepare myself for surgery, I'm following several support groups and it's clear that a major common problem is LATE DIAGNOSIS, making intervention much more invasive, expensive, and physically and emotionally traumatic.

The current standard for diagnosis begins with a bimanual pelvic exam, typically part of your routine pap or annual well-woman visit (more on this). Your ob-gyn places one or two gloved fingers into your va**na, and pushes their fingers up toward your cervix. The other hand presses on your abdomen from the outside to feel your internal organs, including your uterus and ovaries.

From my personal experience, it was not effective at diagnosing my fibroids, and unfortunately I’M NOT ALONE.

Unless you report symptoms (heavy menstrual bleeding, pain) it is considered medically unnecessary to order an ultrasound. If you are in a high-risk demographic or TTC 30+, EMPOWER YOURSELF to . Ultrasounds are minimally invasive, low-cost, and highly effective at diagnosing fibroids and abnormal growths. Pelvic ultrasounds can be done externally (abdominal) or internally (transva**nal).

High-risk factors:
• Family history
• Age: Incidence peaks at 35+
• Race: African and Asian-Chinese decent
• Vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test)
• High-BMI

50-70% of uterine fibroids are asymptomatic, until they are not. Take it from me - at 7cm, my largest fibroid was mostly "silent" until I was facing hard decisions about surgeries to save any chance of ever carrying a child in my womb. That's why EARLY DIAGNOSIS by ULTRASOUND is key. (Yes, that image is my ultrasound scan).

At this stage, I've had my fourth ultrasound by a surgical specialist who has ordered an MRI and endometrial biopsy. The MRI is an important pre-surgical evaluation to accurately locate fibroids relative to surrounding structures. It also detects other potential abnormal growths including endometriosis. The endometrial biopsy tests for cancer and BCL-6, a marker for endometriosis. Endo and Fibroids often show up together.

Be informed, be empowered, ask questions, get answers, advocate for your body and ask for the scan!

One of my favorite apps to recommend is particularly for patients with low back pain. The app allows you to “boost” your routine with low back stretches (or hip flexors for those with SI joint pain). That combined with a Yin Yoga option curates a gentle routine with deep stretches, long holds, melting into poses. Doesn’t that sound lovely?? 🧘🏻‍♀️✨

Once pain and mobility improves with acupuncture treatments and at-home care, the app is great for strengthening exercises for the core and back, and more balanced routines.

Welcome to VIBRANT acupuncture & sound!

This weekend, I celebrated my 42nd birthday. According to the Huángdì Nèijīng medical text, our lives go through periodic cycles of jīng 精, each one bringing about great change in our bodies and lives. For women, this cycle comes around in periods of 7 years (8 years for men).

By age 42, it says, “her peak condition declines gradually, her face withers, her hair begins to thin, her complexion wanes and her hair turns white.” Okay, that’s a bit harsh 😅

Of course, these cycles can vary depending on how we live our lives: how we handle stress, how we choose to nourish our bodies, and how we act and react to our environment. The cycles also remind us to honor our life experiences, the wisdom gained with each phase, and to make the most of our lives. That aging is as natural as the changing seasons, a beautiful part of life to be embraced and celebrated.

As a healthcare provider, this is how I support and empower our community in achieving optimal, holistic health.
