Where is love in the brain?
Neuroscience suggests the answer isn’t a single location—it’s a coordinated brain state.
Love emerges from multiple systems working together:
• value and reward circuits
• motivation and prioritization systems
• interoceptive “felt sense” networks
• social cognition and meaning-making regions
Recent fMRI research even shows that different types of love—romantic, parental, friendship, compassion, pet bonds, and love of nature—recruit these systems differently.
This helps explain why:
• love feels embodied, not abstract
• rejection can activate physical pain circuits
• neurodivergent brains often experience emotional intensity more strongly
