Our history began in 1963 with a vision by Bishop William J. Cox, who was a member of the Commission on the Problems of Aging and a member of the Cumberland Lions Club. Seeing the need for nursing beds and realizing that the Lions Club was looking to sponsor a major community project, Cox coordinated the union of the two. The initial facility was constructed for 50 beds but was expanded to 101 in 1981. In 1995, rehabilitation services were increased to meet the needs of individuals requiring intensive therapy in order to fully function when they returned home. In December of 1997, Lions Manor contracted with Independent Dialysis Foundation to provide hemo-dialysis on site to nursing facility residents. Lions Manor had evolved to stay on the forefront of skilled nursing services delivery over the first 35 years. In order to better reflect the changes, the board of directors authorized changing our name to The Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care on April 17, 2006. On August 1, 2020 The Lions Center was officially sold to Barton Healthcare Management Inc. and our name was changed to Hearthstone Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Barton plans to construct a new complex for seniors on Route 220. The facility is expected to include independent living apartments and cottages, a 101-bed skilled nursing center and an assisted living facility that will accommodate 40-60 residents. The project is currently in the design phase with a target of completion in 2023.
