Dorothy Clarabelle Rhoads, 97, passed peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. She is predeceased by her loving husband C. Donald Rhoads.

Born on April 20, 1928 in Johnstown, PA to Helen Lillian and Ralph Henry Constable, she was one of 9 children. She grew up in a happy, loving home. Dorothy is the last to join her parents and siblings in eternal rest.

Dot had faith and family as the center of her life. She is survived by her children, Earl Freeman (Sue,) Diane Rhoads, Linda Hafer, Kevin Rhoads (Stacy,) and Carol Rhoads (Jerry), as well as grandchildren Danny (Elise,) Megan, Tommy, Ellie (Kyle,) Ben, Kim and Terri. Dot also is survived by her 5 great grandchildren: Cara, Lillian, Perrin, Rooney and Olive Joy, and 4 step grandchildren.: Zack, Emily, Brittany and Cassandra.

Dot grew up a member of Park Avenue United Methodist church of Johnstown, PA. If you ask her and her husband, Don, this is where they met. Being born just two weeks apart and attending the same church, they met sleeping together in a crib in the church nursery. Dad loved to say they slept together before it was popular.

Dot later joined The First United Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg, PA, and finally, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Cumberland, MD. She truly felt at home with her church family. There, she sang in the choir, served the community children and volunteered in numerous other ways. Dorothy was a woman of strong faith and never swore, but in her later years she was a founding member of the “Good Christian Bitches,” a close group of friends from St. Paul’s who would gather frequently for afternoon snacks, games and laughter.

Her legacy lives on in her family members. Dot valued having all of her family together. She was always the hostess for holidays and beds were made up and ready for any child or grandchild that wanted to visit. She consistently made home-cooked meals, and her tasty home-made applesauce has been enjoyed by many. For the majority of her long life, there was never a summer without a Rhoads beach vacation or a girl’s weekend without a shopping spree.

Dot’s life was filled with card clubs, arranging bus trips, painting, attending aerobics all the way through her 80s, and gathering friends and family. She was great at staying connected with those in her life. In her later years she filled her days with puzzles, looking through photo albums and watching home videos and just about every Hallmark movie there is.

Her children and grandchildren will always be grateful for the light she was in the family. There will always be a funny story to tell or a memory to share about “Mom,” “Grandma,” “Granny” and “Gigi.” Her humor, her silly words and sayings, her made up songs - they will all be remembered and repeated fondly.

Visitation will be held at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, MD, on Tuesday, Oct 14th from 4-7pm.

On Wednesday, visitation will be from 10-11am in the vestibule of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 15 N Smallwood St, Cumberland, MD, followed by a funeral service at 11am with Rev. Ryan Viands officiating.

Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, PA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Cumberland, MD.

Stanley “Stan the Man” Martin Ziler, 74, of Frostburg, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025 at his home.

Born April 20, 1951, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late James Howard and Marie Rose (Wilson) Ziler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by loving wife, Debra (Schrock) Ziler; brother, Irvin Ziler; sisters, Rose Keller and Kathleen Jenkins.
Dad passed away with peace, dignity, and grace. If you knew him, you should expect that he did it on his time, his way, and was the man with the final plan to the very end. He fought the most courageous battle of cancer.

Stanley was a 1969 graduate of Beall High School. He then served in the Army Reserves for six years; worked at National Jet; Allegany County Court House; 19 years at Schmidt Blue Ribbon Bakery; and retired in 2012 after working 20 years at the Thomas B Finan Center.

Stanley enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never missed any of their school and sporting events. He was the rock to our family, he knew best, and would tell you so whether you wanted to hear it or not. He was a very social person. He enjoyed keeping “caught up” with his friends and family, especially Harold “Ducky” and Mary Kay Duckworth, among many others.

It meant a lot to the family to read what the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department said about our Dad:

“Stanley was a life member who dedicated more than 54 years of service to our department, having joined on January 18, 1971. In 1977, he proudly completed the University of Maryland, Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute’s Firefighter Training Course – Basic, furthering his commitment to protecting and serving his community.

Stanley’s legacy of service, dedication, and community spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the honor of serving beside him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and brothers and sisters in the fire service.
Over the decades, Stanley became a fixture within the department, always lending his time, energy, and support. In recent years, many came to know and love seeing him walking the floors of Memory Hall during bingo nights, where his presence brought warmth and familiarity to all who attended.

Rest easy, Brother. We’ll take it from here.”

Stanley is survived by his loving daughters, Jennifer Ann Roberts and husband Jason and Julie Rae Salonish and husband Nick; five grandchildren, Ashley and Cynthia Martin, Andrew Sgaggero , Haylei and Jacob Salonish; six great grandchildren, Madison, Makenna and Taylyn Sgaggero; Blake Kastell, Brayleigh and Dalton Plummer; two bonus great grandchildren Dalton Altman and Paisley Guthrie; a “baby sister” and primary care giver during his illness Helen McKinley; and a very large extended family.
The family would like to thank WVU Cancer Institute at Potomac Valley Hospital, Dr. Shannon and all the caring and compassionate staff, Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, Dr. Khanna and staff, and the UPMC Hospice Nurses.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Highway, Cresaptown on Friday, September 12th, 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the funeral home, on Saturday September 13th at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lincoln Shook officiating. Following will be a ceremony by the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be members of the Shaft Volunteer Fire Dept.

07/29/2025

Scott W. Zimmerly, 90, of Cumberland, MD, went to the great racetrack in the sky Monday, July 28, 2025, at UPMC Western Maryland.

Born March 24, 1935 in Cumberland, he was a son of the late Winfield S. Zimmerly and Stella (Grady) Zimmerly-Decker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine German and stepfather, Carl F. Decker.

Scott was in the Army National Guard and served as a mess cook and once out of the Army, never stopped cooking like he was cooking for an Army. God broke the mold when he made Scott. He was the mayor of the neighborhood and the master of ceremonies for all of the amazing parties he hosted at his house and was also, of course, the Master Chef too along with providing all of the entertainment with his witty poems he would recite and songs he would perform accompanied by his wife on the piano and his dog LB and also by playing his harmonica and accordion. Being a man of many skills and a man who would give you the shirt off of his back, he was an accomplished mechanic who was only rich from the love of his friends and family, and he practically gave everything away including his expertise and services when working on cars. You never ever left his house with an empty stomach or an empty heart which he filled with love and memories for you to cherish forever. In his early days, he was a “reckloose” racecar and motorcycle driver who was never afraid of anything even up until the day he left this earth. He also loved traveling to Florida in his motorhome with his beloved wife, Joyce, and to visit family. Speaking of family, you will never meet a man who loved his family more with tributes he created all throughout his house to honor every family member and especially his grandchildren, Zach and Zayla (“the little girl”). To know him was to love him and never ever forget him.

Surviving is the love of his life who he was married to for over 60 years, Joyce Zimmerly; a son, Brad Zimmerly and wife, Carla; grandchildren, Zachary Scott Zimmerly and Zayla Rachelle Zimmerly both of Pittsburgh, PA; nephews and niece, William Brian German of Easton, MD, David Lynn Ogden of Cresaptown, Tonya Ogden VanMeter of Cresaptown, Peter Douglas Ogden of Colorado.

Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, on Thursday, July 31st from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Friday, August 1st from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and a funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Doug Seaman officiating.
