UPMC hospitals remain open and fully operational following the weekend snowstorm.

All UPMC hospitals and emergency departments have continued to operate without interruption throughout the weekend, thanks to the dedication of our staff.

Patients scheduled for procedures or office visits on Monday should confirm their appointments before traveling. If you have not already heard from your physician’s office, please call or message your provider to verify your appointment or discuss options if you feel unsafe traveling. We are not able to confirm individual provider or location status via social media.

Most offices will be open as usual, and many can offer later appointments, virtual telemedicine visits, or reschedule for later in the week.

As always, if you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 immediately.

Stay safe!

Brittany Friend, a health coach from our Community Health and Wellness team at UPMC Western Maryland, recently joined WCBC Radio to discuss the benefits of free health coaching.

Brittany emphasized that “Health coaching is not us telling you what to do, the client is really the driver of this program. We meet them where they are and help them make lifestyle changes based on what’s important to them.”

She also shared that “Health coaching is designed to keep people healthy and out of the hospital. This can be anything from creating exercise plans or helping individuals manage stress.”

Flu cases are rapidly increasing across the United States this respiratory virus season, with some activity hitting record levels according to new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

If you have symptoms of a respiratory illness, here’s what you can do:
🏠 Stay home — Don’t go to work or school until your symptoms subside to avoid spreading respiratory viruses to others. “You should definitely stay home while you have a fever because that’s the most contagious period for these viruses, and within 24 hours of your fever going away,” says Dr. Graham Snyder, medical director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology at UPMC.
😷 Wear a mask — If you’re out in public, wearing a mask that covers your nose and mouth can reduce your risk of spreading a respiratory virus to others.
🧐 Get tested — Take at-home flu and COVID-19 tests, or talk to your doctor about getting an in-office test.
❤️‍🩹 Get treatments — If you test positive for flu or COVID-19, ask your doctor about antiviral treatments. You can also try over-the-counter medicines or home remedies to manage your symptoms.

A little blast from the past is back at UPMC Western Maryland!

Parents can once again enjoy a special celebratory lunch following the birth of their baby, shared with their support person before discharge. In collaboration with our dietary team, we’ve created a thoughtful menu of options, served with personal touches like candles, a centerpiece, and silverware wrapped with pink or blue ribbons.

We’re proud to reintroduce this tradition and hope it’s something families look forward to when choosing us to welcome their newest arrival.

Pictured as she enjoys her first meal as a mom is Alyssa Berger and Daniel Berger of Keyser, WV, and members of our dietary team excited for this special moment for the new parents.

Flu activity is increasing rapidly across Maryland, with cases rising earlier and more sharply than last season. Although respiratory illness levels are currently high statewide, infectious disease experts stress that prevention still makes a real impact.

“It’s not too late to get a flu shot if you haven’t had one,” says Dr. Matthew Simmons, infectious disease specialist at UPMC Western Maryland. “The flu vaccine helps reduce the risk of severe illness and can prevent hospitalization.

Simple steps like vaccination, handwashing, good cough hygiene, masking when sick, and choosing the right level of care, can help protect you and reduce strain on emergency departments (ED).

If symptoms are mild, consider contacting your primary care provider or visiting urgent care; reserve the ED for severe symptoms like chest pain, significant shortness of breath, or fever that won’t come down.
