It’s that time again. We are seeing a clear rise in colds caused by rhinovirus and enterovirus, along with flu and RSV in our community.

If it feels like everyone has a cough right now, you are not imagining it.

Here is what we are seeing most:

• Runny nose
• Cough
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Fatigue
• Decreased appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea with enterovirus

Most rhinovirus infections look like a typical cold and improve with supportive care. Flu often comes on suddenly with higher fever, body aches, and more fatigue. RSV can cause significant congestion and wheezing, especially in babies and toddlers.

When should you call?

Call us if your child has:
• Difficulty breathing or fast breathing
• Retractions or working hard to breathe
• Poor drinking or fewer wet diapers
• Lethargy or hard to wake
• Fever in a baby under 3 months
• Symptoms that are worsening instead of improving

Otherwise, many viral illnesses can be managed at home with fluids, rest, fever control, and patience. Lots of patience.

Prevention still matters:
• Flu vaccine is strongly recommended
• Good handwashing
• Covering coughs
• Staying home when sick

There is no prize for powering through a virus. Rest helps recovery and protects others.

If you are unsure whether to call or chill, we are here for you. Always.

World Wildlife Day

Every year on March 3, we celebrate World Wildlife Day, a global reminder that the health of our planet and the health of our children are deeply connected.

Clean air. Safe water. Nutritious food.
All of these begin with thriving ecosystems.

Wildlife is not just something we see at the zoo or on documentaries. It is part of the delicate system that keeps our world balanced. When we protect animals and their habitats, we are protecting the future our children will grow up in.

Simple ways families can participate:

• Spend time outdoors and explore local parks
• Reduce plastic use and recycle consistently
• Support conservation organizations
• Teach kids to respect animals and natural spaces

Healthy planet. Healthy kids. It really is that simple.

If you are looking for a meaningful family activity this week, head outside and let curiosity lead the way. Nature is the original classroom.

Infant & Child CPR Classes at One Family Pediatrics

As parents, caregivers, and grandparents, we all hope we never need CPR. But knowing what to do in those first critical minutes can truly save a life.

At One Family Pediatrics, we offer hands-on infant and child CPR training designed specifically for families and caregivers. This is practical, real-world training that builds confidence, not panic.

What you’ll learn:

• Infant and child CPR techniques
• Choking rescue for babies and kids
• When and how to call for help
• How to stay calm and act quickly in an emergency

Whether you’re expecting a baby, have a newborn at home, or care for young children, this class gives you the skills and peace of mind every caregiver deserves.

We keep sessions small, supportive, and interactive so you leave feeling prepared, not overwhelmed.

New data show that at least 50 infants died after being placed in inclined sleepers that were later recalled. These devices were once marketed as safe for sleep and soothing, but evidence tells a different story.

Safe sleep still matters. Every time. For every baby.

Here is what families need to remember:

• Always place babies on their back to sleep.
• Use a firm, flat sleep surface.
• Avoid inclined sleep products for unsupervised sleep.

These tragedies reinforce why pediatricians continue to emphasize evidence-based safe sleep guidance. Awareness saves lives.

Let’s keep protecting our babies through informed choices and trusted guidance.

⚠️ Why Pediatricians Worry About Meningitis

In the first few hours, meningitis does not look dramatic.

It looks like the flu.
It looks like RSV.
It looks like a bad cold.

Fever. Vomiting. Headache. Fatigue. Fussiness. Poor feeding.

Nothing that immediately screams emergency.

But with bacterial meningitis, things can change fast.

As the day goes on, you may see:
• Severe headache
• Neck stiffness
• Confusion
• Extreme sleepiness
• A new rash
• Seizures

In rare but serious cases, a child can become critically ill within hours, and death can occur within 24 hours of symptom onset.

This is why we take worsening symptoms, difficulty waking, or a child who just seems significantly worse very seriously.

Trust your instincts. If something feels off, seek care immediately.

Vaccines help protect against several causes of meningitis. Community immunity matters.

Questions about symptoms or vaccines? We are here to talk.

🛡️ What Is Herd Immunity and Why Should Parents Care?

Herd immunity happens when enough people in a community are vaccinated that a disease cannot spread easily.

Think of it like building a protective wall.
That wall protects:
👶 Babies too young to be vaccinated
🧒 Children receiving chemotherapy
💙 Kids with weakened immune systems

For measles, about 95% of the community needs to be vaccinated to prevent outbreaks.

In Georgia, current kindergarten MMR rates are closer to the high 80s. That is below the level needed for strong herd immunity.

When vaccination rates drop, outbreaks can happen.
Herd immunity is not just about protecting one child.

It is about protecting all children.

If you have questions about vaccines, we are here to talk. No pressure. Just evidence-based guidance and honest conversation.

📱 Who are you following for your child’s health advice?

In a world full of reels, hacks, and “miracle” tips, it can be hard to know what is actually safe for your child.

Not all health advice online is created equal.

Before you try a trend, ask yourself:

✔️ Is this coming from a board-certified pediatrician?
✔️ Is it based on evidence, not just personal experience?
✔️ Does it match recommendations from trusted organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics?

Social media can be a helpful place to learn. It can also spread misinformation quickly. That is why it matters who you follow.

At One Family Pediatrics, we believe parents deserve:
✨ Evidence-based guidance
✨ Clear explanations
✨ Reassurance without fear
✨ A real pediatrician who knows your child

Your child’s health is too important for guesswork.

If you ever see something online and wonder, “Is this actually true?” bring it to us. We are happy to talk it through with you.

Reliable information. Real conversations. One family at a time.

🦠 **Flu Strain B Is Going Around**

We are seeing an increase in Influenza B in our community right now.

Here’s what parents should know 👇

🤒 **Symptoms can include:**
• Sudden high fever
• Body aches
• Headache
• Sore throat
• Cough
• Extreme fatigue
• Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea in kids

Many children go from “totally fine” to “I can’t move” in a matter of hours.

⏳ **How long does it last?**
Most kids start improving in 5 to 7 days.
Cough and tiredness can linger a little longer.

🚩 **Call your pediatrician if you notice:**
• Trouble breathing
• Chest pain
• Signs of dehydration
• Fever lasting more than 3 to 4 days
• Any fever in a baby under 3 months
• Unable to walk
• Or that gut feeling that something just is not right

There is no prize for powering through. If you are unsure, call.

💊 **What helps?**
• Fluids
• Rest
• Fever control with proper dosing
• Antiviral medication may be recommended for some children if started early

💉 **Reminder:** The flu vaccine protects against both Influenza A and B strains and can reduce severity even if someone still gets sick.

Flu season does not mean you did something wrong. It means viruses are doing what viruses do. We are here to help you navigate it calmly and confidently.

✝️ Ash Wednesday

Today marks the beginning of Lent.
Ash Wednesday is a quiet, meaningful reminder to pause, reflect, and reset.

For many families, this season is about:
🤍 Reflection
🤍 Gratitude
🤍 Forgiveness
🤍 Intentional time together

In pediatrics, we talk a lot about growth. Lent is a different kind of growth. Slowing down. Being mindful. Choosing kindness. Modeling faith and compassion for our children in small, everyday ways.

Whether that looks like:
• Praying together before bed
• Adding one small act of kindness each day
• Reducing distractions and increasing connection
• Or simply taking a deep breath and starting again

This season is about progress, not perfection.

Wishing peace and renewal to all of our families observing today. 💜

🌙 Ramadan Mubarak

Wishing a peaceful and blessed Ramadan to all of our families observing this holy month.

Ramadan is a time of reflection, gratitude, prayer, generosity, and community. It is also a time when routines shift, sleep gets interesting, and little ones ask very big questions about faith and fasting.

For families with children:
✨ Focus on connection over perfection
✨ Encourage small acts of kindness
✨ Keep hydration and balanced meals in mind for growing bodies
✨ Give yourself grace with changing sleep schedules

If your child is considering fasting and you have questions about what is safe for their age or health needs, we are always here to guide you.

May this month bring peace to your home, strength to your heart, and meaningful moments with the people you love.

✨ Random Acts of Kindness Day ✨

Today is a beautiful reminder that small moments matter.

A note in a lunchbox.
Holding the door.
Checking in on a tired parent.
Letting someone go ahead of you in line.

Kindness does not have to be big to be powerful.

As pediatricians, we see it every day. A sibling bringing a toy to a nervous brother. A parent comforting a child during vaccines. A teenager helping a younger patient find the prize basket.

Those tiny moments? They shape how kids see the world.

Teaching kindness is one of the most important things we do as parents. And the best way to teach it is to model it.

So today, let your child catch you being kind. 💛

And if you need a little kindness yourself, we are here for you.
