A New Way to Get Screened for Colon Cancer — Now Offered at Our Office.
We’re excited to offer a new, FDA-approved blood test option for colorectal cancer screening at our clinic.
SHIELD is a blood-based screening test designed for average-risk adults ages 45–74. It provides another option for patients who may find traditional screening methods difficult or unappealing.
What is SHIELD?
• An FDA-approved blood test for colon cancer screening
• Performed during a routine visit or lab appointment
• No stool sample
• No bowel prep
• No special preparation required
Your healthcare provider draws a small amount of blood, which is sent to a certified clinical laboratory for testing. Results are reported as positive or negative and reviewed with you by your provider.
Is this better than colonoscopy or Cologuard?
No — colonoscopy remains the gold standard.
However, SHIELD may be a more appealing option for some average-risk patients who would otherwise delay or avoid screening altogether.
Screening only works if it’s done — and this test offers another pathway to get screened.
Who is SHIELD for?
• Adults 45+
• Average risk for colorectal cancer
• Individuals who are due for screening
• Patients who prefer a blood test over stool-based testing
Important to know
• SHIELD is not intended for high-risk individuals
• It does not replace colonoscopy for diagnosis or surveillance
• A positive result requires follow-up colonoscopy
• Routine colorectal cancer screening should still be discussed with your provider.
Insurance coverage for Tricare and Medicare insurances at this time.
Why does this matter?
Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death, despite the availability of effective screening tools. Many patients delay or avoid stool-based testing or colonoscopy — and missed screening means missed opportunities for early detection.
Ask your provider if SHIELD screening is right for you at your next visit.
