ℹ🌿 HOW TO HELP YOUR CLIENTS UNDERSTAND THEIR WINDOW OF TOLERANCE- [INFOGRAPHIC]

Our clients are best able to cope with stressors and triggers when they’re operating within their window of tolerance.

But a traumatic experience can narrow our clients’ window of tolerance, leading to states of either hyper- or hypo-arousal.

So we created this infographic as a tool you can share with your clients. It can help you explain what’s going on when they’re feeling dysregulated. Plus, this will help to support the exercises and work you do together as an important part of healing.

ℹ️🌿 ALWAYS ALERT – HYPERVIGILANCE IN COMPLEX POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER |

Even those who go through trauma later in life, either complex and long-term or one single event, can get their life-skills affected and changed. One example for a changed life-skill is hypervigilance, a symptom present in most victims of trauma. While vigilance, an awareness of what is going on around you, reading people right, knowing when a situation is triggering, is important, in hypervigilance that quickly gets out of proportion. A constant reading of the environment, not trusting people around you, and always expecting a threat, can be both draining mentally and physically. And can have a very negative effect on one’s life and relationships. While hypervigilance is also a symptom experienced by those suffering from anxiety and PTSD, I want to focus on its presence in those struggling with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

ℹ️🌿HOW A CAREGIVER’S TRAUMA CAN IMPACT A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT + INFOGRAPHIC | BY NICABM

When someone experiences trauma, its physical and emotional effects can sometimes impact their children – and this can begin in utero.

You see, during times of stress, the body releases cortisol – and as you know, that’s one of the ways our body helps us cope with physically or emotionally difficult situations.

But when trauma elevates cortisol to unhealthy levels, it can have an epigenetic impact – not only on the client, but on their children as well.

So how can this happen?...."

Do you find yourself feeling angry all the time? Maybe small things keep bother you, or you find yourself getting more irritated by things that normally wouldn’t cause you to react in such a manner. Maybe you’ve always been really angry, as long as you can remember.

Just like fear, anger is a normal emotion. When it’s out of balance it can actually help you to understand yourself better and encourage you to make the changes you need to in order to have a happy and healthy life."

03/25/2022

"These data suggest that not being able to use your mobile device impacts your psychological state, but it does so differentially, depending on the nature of your usage and your age.2

Of course, the reasons underlying the social media withdrawal in younger and older people require further exploration. Older people may have more stressful lives and need an escape, so they use their phones like a sedative. In contrast, younger people may be seeking excitement, so they use their mobile device like a stimulant.

The importance of mobile devices for older adults, perhaps using them for work, e-mails, bills, banking, compared to younger users, who perhaps have, predominately, recreational usage, may also have influenced the nature of withdrawal effects. Thus, although the effect of age is indicative of an interesting variable impacting social media withdrawal, the conclusions must remain speculative, as differences may reflect reasons other than age.

Whatever the eventual explanation of these different social media withdrawal effects, these results illustrate two essential points. First, high levels of digital access, whether through traditional PCs or mobile devices, can damage psychological well-being. Some of this harm appears similar to that seen in substance addictions in that there are withdrawal effects. Second, the withdrawal effects of being without our devices may be due to very different aspects of the digital world."

The effects of withdrawal from our phones affects us in different ways.

Here/Now Perspectives, Mental Health Resiliency and Coping with the Realities of a Turbulent World amid a Pandemic and Russia/Ukraine Tensions…

4. Practice recovering as quickly as possible from all your stressful experiences. If you watch the news and it’s upsetting, follow that by consciously taking time to breathe, ground yourself, and recover.

5. Approach every situation with a positive mindset. This means focusing on positive expectations and an attitude of persistence and grit: “Whatever it takes, I’m going to do it.” The more you decide and commit to a healthy perspective, the easier the process becomes.

6. Be current with your emotions, as noted above. Find a way to get your feelings out and then to let go.

7. Hold the intention to be present as much as possible. Have a plan to remind yourself to tune into your awareness throughout the day. Bring yourself present by noticing what you are taking in through your five senses. You are most effective when you are present.

Steps for finding the best way to be resilient during difficult times.

"It’s natural to want to protect children from scary things, but parents need to be ready to talk with their children about war.
Parenting expert Dr. Deborah Gilboa says most parents don’t have to talk to young children about it unless they ask — or have a family member or friend in the military.

“It is better to engage with children age 8 or older,” the parenting expert told TODAY Parents. “But, if they might hear about it anywhere else you might want to talk about it at any age.”

“Figure out what you want them to learn. What’s the one message you want to send along with whatever facts,” she said.

Messages could include: “The war is far away and we’re safe. Or “politics really matter in people’s lives and we have to vote,” for example.

Gilboa said parents should also work through their feelings before talking with their children.

“You can't be a place for your child to process your emotions,” she explained. “A conversation with your child about a big scary somewhat incomprehensible topic is not the right place to work out your emotions.”

She also reminded parents they don’t have to have all the answers. Thinking through a problem together helps children learn to navigate ambiguous feelings.

“It gives them practice thinking about big hard things,” Gilboa said.

She shared advice on how to talk to children age-by-age about war.

Preschool to age 8:
For younger children, Gilboa recommended giving them factual information with a personal value. It should be short and clear. Messages could include: “There’s a war far away where there are U.S. soldiers. We’re safe but it is a big deal.”

“If they ask you a follow-up question, state the answer simply and reinforce (your value),” she said.

So if a child asks, “Why are they fighting?” parents can say, “They’re fighting over who should be in charge but it is far away from here.”

It’s essential for parents to reassure their children and keep an open dialogue.

“It is really helpful to say to your child, ‘When you have more feelings come talk to me.’ Not if, when. When opens the door wider than if,” she said."
