FEHNCY community partner Pimicikamak/Cross Lake Cree Nation has declared a state of emergency as a result of a crisis that started on Dec 28th, 2025 due to a widespread power outage and frigid temperatures.

Once power was restored, hundreds of homes have experienced burst pipes and flooding, spoiled food and uninhabitable homes.
Thousands have been evacuated as the community tries to repair homes and infrastructure, including the water treatment facility. This is the 2nd time in less than a year that members of this community have been forced to leave their homes, the last time due to the summer of 2025 wildfire emergency.

We have been sending our thoughts and prayers to the families of Cross Lake and at the same time we recognize that collective action can make a real difference. So the FEHNCY team urges you, your community group, or your workplace send donations to the Red Cross appeal who are mobilizing emergency relief and recovery efforts.

Our Mission

The Food, Environment, Health and Nutrition of First Nations Children and Youth (FEHNCY) is a study designed to assess the food environments and food security, housing conditions and indoor air quality, environmental contaminants exposure, and health indicators for First Nation children and youth living on-reserve. Our overall goal is to promote the establishment of government policy and community programming recommendations focused towards the improvements of First Nations children’s health. The study will also assist in capacity building regarding nutrition and environmental health concerns within First Nations and Assembly of First Nations (AFN).

Over the last few decades, plenty of surveys have supported the existing disparities between the health status of the First Nations children and youth living on-reserve and the rest of the children and youth population in Canada. Yet, there is no significant data to relate the influences of socio-environmental elements on the healthy living of the First Nations children and youth. FEHNCY promises to address this knowledge gap by carrying a nation-wide study, comprising 50 randomly selected First Nations from the seven Assembly of First Nations (AFN) regions. To determine the impacts of food environments, food security and nutrition in the well-being of children and youth in First Nations communities and quantify child and youth exposure to environmental contaminants are key objectives of this study. Likewise, FEHNCY intends to study the relationship between housing conditions, Indoor Air Quality and health outcomes in children and youth. Also, by promoting community mobilization and intergenerational capacity building, the study encourages discussion of environment, food and nutrition with the children, youth and parents of the communities.
