A spasm is an involuntary (uncontrollable by will) violent contraction of a muscle 💪 That is not comfortable 😬.

It arises from insufficient blood supply 🔴 in the muscle or excessive physical exertion🏃♂️, excessive sweating 😥 or during improperly performed movement 🤾♂️. Dehydration 🥤 of the body and vascular diseases like varicose veins can also be the cause. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies also cause cramps.

The basic prevention of muscle cramps is a physical activity 🚶♀️, reduction of body weight, diet, drinking water 🥛. Prolonged physical activity can lead to mineral deficiencies (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium) and vitamin deficiencies (especially B, D and E vitamins). Therefore, it is good to supplement these substances as well.

If the cramps are caused by muscle shortening 💪, stretching is recommended🧘♀️.
Oh, and doctors like to recommend so-called myorelaxants.
What to do when a muscle spasm starts? Stop physical activity and try to gently stretch the affected muscle. Have a drink.

And what helps you with cramps? 😊 Share with us in the comments. More tips are always handy 👍

Warning. With prolonged cramping there is a risk of cell death due to lack of blood supply to the muscle.

Crunching in the joints has various sources, today we will zoom in on the most relevant in our opinion.

A joint is the union of two or more bones🦴 which are covered by cartilage. This joint is mobile and inside the joint we find the synovial layer. This has vascular and nerve supply and has a regulatory capacity. This layer produces synovial fluid that prevents friction, ensures smooth gliding of the articular surfaces and nourishes the cartilage.

However, air can get into the synovial fluid 🌬. If we stretch the joint, the negative pressure in the joint sucks carbon dioxide and oxygen into the synovial fluid. These gases combine in the fluid to form large bubbles 💭 which can then burst. And this bursting can even be audible 👂.

But according to some research, the loud sound is produced when a bubble 💭 forms in a joint and not directly by its exploding 💣.

And I'm sure you're wondering if cracking in joints is harmful ❓
Be careful here, there's no such thing as cracking. The above described cracking in the joints according to research is not harmful. Cracking can also be caused by structures rubbing against each other. Or in very thin people, a tendon running over a bone makes a loud sound. Be careful in these cases and consult it with a physiotherapist or a doctor 👨⚕️.

There are more theories about the origin of the crunching, such as the theory of the meniscoid pinching, the theory of cartilage sticking or muscle spasm.
Do you know any other theories of how crunching in joints arises? Let us know in the comments 😊

We shouldn't exercise just to look good. We exercise for pleasure, we enjoy it and exercise brings us other benefits as well. And why do you exercise?

Well, today let's talk about the effects that exercise has on our bones. Physical activity or appropriate exercise prevents the development of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Bone is a highly vascularised tissue and dysregulation of the vasculature is associated with many bone diseases, such as osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. During life, bone ages due to an imbalance between bone formation and bone resorption (loss), which can lead to osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). Therefore exercise is also taken as prevention against these diseases.

Encouraging physical exercise during a child's growth increases the likelihood of bone accumulation and delays the onset of osteoporosis. Several studies show that physical exercise is associated with higher bone density and lower incidence of fractures The final bone mass is maintained despite ageing, and despite reduced physical activity in adulthood.

Therefore, exercise can also be considered as the best non-pharmacological treatment for pathological conditions such as osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In these days, immunity is important, so... How long do you sleep every day?
Sleep 💤 affects various immune parameters, reduces the risk of infection and can improve vaccine responses 💉.
This happens by regulating immunological markers and cells. T lymphocytes are a type of lymphocytes (white blood cells), which protect us from harmful substances. Research shows that sleep💤 improves the ability of T lymphocytes to fight harmful substances. If we don't get enough sleep, we reduce the production of T lymphocytes, which can lower our defence mechanisms and make us more susceptible to infections🤕.
How about COVID-19 and sleep?
Sleep affects immunity. The COVID-19 pandemic can promote sleep disturbances😴 and impair immune function🤧 because immunological markers are upregulated. The psychological problems induced by the COVID-19 pandemic change circadian rhythms, compromising sleep quality and therefore the immune system.
💤
This is also why sufficient sleep is important.

In the picture you can see where the pain originates and in the text you can read what it actually means 🦵🏻

Arthritis, degenerative inflammation of a joint.
Injury of the medial/internal meniscus is caused by pathological rotation of the tibia 🔄 The thigh is usualy fixed during the injury. In the medial part, the meniscus is fused with part of the internal collateral ligament, that’s why it is less mobile and more vulnerable.

Damage to the medial collateral ligament will cause instability of the knee 😱. The collateral ligaments are designed to stabilize the knee laterally↔️. The internal (medial) collateral ligament goes from the inside of the distal femur to the inside of the head of the tibia. This prevents the inner joint cleft from opening and deflecting the knees into an X.

Morbus Osgood-Schlatter is an aseptic necrosis of the attachment of the musculus quadriceps femoris. It attaches to the tibial tuberosity, where pain also arises. It occurs in active adolescents 🏃♂️ (8 -15 years) during the period of maximum growth. There is overloading of the growth plate muscle attachment and overloading of the extensor apparatus of the knee joint.

Displaced osteochondrosis is an injury which causes a gradual loosening of cartilage. It arises after trauma or due to avascular necrosis. It may cause pain, swelling or locking of the joint.

Jumper's knee 🏃♀️or also tendinopathy of the ligamentum patellae is tendinopathic pain in the tendon of the m. quadriceps femoris. It arises after repeated overloading of the knee joint and subsequent inflammatory irritation. It is found mainly in athletes🏃♂️ who jumps very often. Caution! It only occurs on the knee where pathological influences are already present.

Many patients come to our clinic with a knee pain. So we thought it would be nice to bring you closer to the knee joint 🦵🏻We cannot mention everything, so we have selected only some causes. In the picture you can see where the pain originates and in the text you can read what it actually means 🦵🏻
In Iliotibial Tract Syndrome, the pain occurs on the outside of the knee, mainly when running downhill or uphill ⛰, walking up stairs. The pain makes you stop the activity and you will suffer the next day. The iliotibial tract is a wide ligamentous band from the pelvis to the outside of the knee🦵🏻.Iliotibial tract syndrome is caused by excessive friction of the ligamentous band against the bony prominence on the outside of the knee. As a result, inflammation can occur, which is the source of pain😔.
In Chondromalacia (runner's knee, chondropathy of the patella) there is a damaged cartilage on the surface of the patella. This results in softening or malacia of the cartilage and damage to the surface of the patella.
Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa. It is caused by prolonged mechanical overuse or injury of the bursa wall. (The bursa is designed to reduce friction and pressure in the area of the joint where the tendon or muscle passes over the cartilage or bone).

Spiral muscle chains are crucial for correct movement 🏃‍♀️. Muscle spirals are "ribbons" that leads around our body from the shoulders to the lower limbs🦶. Muscle spirals create pressure on the surface of the body, activate the abdominal muscles, slim the torso in the waist area, spontaneously stretch the spine upwards and create buoyancy, which relieves the vertebrae and discs from permanent vertical pressure.
The spiral chains are activated by the movement of the arm 🤳 and shoulder blade.
Each of these spirals is responsible for muscle activity in a different part of the abdominal area. The muscle spirals enable the spine to have optimal mobility and thereby influence the function of the internal organs. They are also used in the rehabilitation of intervertebral discs. The essential thing for activating the spiral chains is a balanced upright posture 🚶‍♀️ and a sufficient range of movement in the shoulder and hip joints.
In the pictures you can see the individual spirals and how the muscles connect to each other.

Explanations:
IL= ipsilateral = located on the same side
KL= contralateral = located on the opposite side

In disorder or disease of the small intestine, reflex changes are present in the muscles at the level of the lumbar vertebrae L4, L5. Increased tenderness on the left hand 🤲 at the level of the radiocarpal joint is present. We find increased skin tenderness, redness 🔴 and tenderness of the forehead 🤦♀️. Some patients experience soreness of the outer edge of the lower jaw 🤭. The shoulder and elbow💪 joints are mainly affected with frequent epicondylitis (tendonitis at the site of attachment).
We can also find shortened m. quadriceps femoris.

TrPs may be present in m. latissimus dorsi, m. supraspinatus, m. infraspinatus, m. teres minor, m. triceps brachi, m. iliopsoas, m. re**us abdominis, m. obliquus externus, internus abdominis, m. transversus abdominis, m. gluteus maximus, m. re**us femoris, m. vastus lateralis and intermedius, m. piriformis, in the extensors of the hand 🖐and in the posterior fibres of the m. deltoideus.
TrPs in the above-mentioned muscles indicate a disorder of the entire digestive system.

Have you ever heard that the quadratus lumborum is connected to the calf muscle🦵 (m. soleus)? Or that the straight abdominal muscle (m. re**us abdominis) is connected to the long flexor of the toes🦶 (m. flexor digitorum longus)?
If not, we present to you muscle loops and muscle chains, which connect even such distant muscles.
A muscle chain is a momentary connection of muscle units, joints, and bones which occurs to enable movement and stabilization. Muscle chains can be divided into vertical and spiral. There are four main spiral and four vertical chains involved in movement and stabilization of the spine.
Thanks to this muscle chains, we can relax one muscle 💪 and other muscles that are chained to it will Relax too.
Why would the patient's leg moves 🦵 when the muscle in the shoulder blade area is squeezed?
Therefore, the physiotherapist should not only focus on the area that troubles the patient, but also treat more distant muscles according to the connection.
In the next posts, we will show which muscles are "connected" to each other. 😊

Vertical muscle chains ensure stability of the spine in static positions 🚶‍♀️ with no limbs movement (e.g. standing or sitting). Vertical muscle chains are placed closer to the body center than spiral muscle chains. Their task is to stabilize the body in static positions🚶‍♀️. Vertical chains are ropes placed on the front and back side of the body. These ropes are stretched from the head💆‍♀️ and shoulders vertically towards the pelvis and lower limbs🦵.
Smíšek lists these four main vertical chains (see the photo).
You can see the individual muscle chain-link for each vertical muscle chain. 💪
Chain-link is a great thing, but very complex. Even for a therapist, it is sometimes difficult to find how the muscle chain-link connects to another.

Traditional Gua Sha massage is a healing, cosmetic 💆‍♀️ and diagnostic technique. Gua means to scrape and sha means to sow. Using guasha, we literally "scrape the disease out of the body".
As a healing 👨‍⚕️technique, it is used for preventing symptoms of common cold🤒, smoking🚬, asthma and acute or chronic pain. It can also be used for muscle pain and tension. Gua Sha is also commonly used for respiratory issues🌬 and high fever🤒.
By applying heat to specific areas of the body, Gua Sha releases excess heat and toxins through the skin surface.
Diagnostically 👨‍⚕️ it is used to show the area with stagnation of blood and qi.
In cosmetics 💆‍♀️, the method is used to tone skin and facial muscles. Also for smoothing the skin, increasing blood circulation and giving the shine and vitality to the skin.
The Gua Sha tools are usually made of buffalo horn, jade, water💦 buffalo horn, piece of jade, Chinese soup spoon and many other materials with smooth rounded edges.
According to Western medicine, massage 💆‍♀️ stimulates blood circulation in the capillaries. Gua Sha uses a scraping technique to create a redness🔴 on the skin. Redness shows the degree of blood and qi stagnation in the body. Long moves under sufficient pressure are used to treat the skin. But be carefull, the therapy needs to be painless. After a massage, a person can feel warmth☀️, pleasant burning or tiredness😴. Traditionally, a dense oil is used to lubricate the skin, so the tool can move more smoothly.
We can see results according to the skin reaction: Light red🔴 color means lack of blood. Dark red means the condition is serious. Black or purple⚫ means there is a long-term severe problem. Brown means that the body is dry 🏜 and lack of fluids 🥤.
This method was modernized by using iron tools. This is how, for example, the Graston technique was created.
Before you go to a therapist, do your homework. Find out if the person has completed a Gua Sha course or has some experience with these methods. Trust but verify. 😊😊
