Bethsabee Stone, M.D., contributed to a multicenter study with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network that seeks to determine whether the use of the Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (FAST) exam, a noninvasive method widely used to detect internal bleeding in adult patients suffering abdominal and chest injuries, impacts care in children who are hemodynamically stable after blunt torso trauma.

Congratulations to the Division of Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine on having all of the abstracts they submitted to the Newborn Brain Society’s 17th International Newborn Brain Conference (INBBC) be accepted. They will be sharing their transformative work among global leaders in newborn brain health in Naples, Italy, in February.

Pediatric resident Lynn Bitar, M.D., was selected to give an oral presentation about the Chalak lab’s work on fetal inflammation. Only 1% of abstracts accepted to INBBC are chosen. The study has also been accepted to be published in Pediatric Research.

Pediatric hematologist Ayesha Zia, M.D., M.S.C.S., recently led two major publications that advance the management of pediatric pulmonary embolism (PE).

Published in the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) journal JTH, Dr. Zia led an international team of experts that defined evidence-informed outcomes that will enable the next generation of randomized clinical trials and observational studies, filling a critical gap in pediatric PE research. Pediatric cardiologist Megan Griffiths, M.D., served as a co-author.

Her latest publication, "How I Treat Pediatric Pulmonary Embolism," in the American Society of Hematology’s journal Blood, gives clinicians practical, case-based frameworks that guide practice in advance of formal guidelines. The work reflects the peer recognition of Dr. Zia’s clinical leadership, scholarship, and international standing in pediatric thrombosis.
