Our faculty physicians are helping youth to see their future selves in white coats or other careers in STEM fields. Each year at Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit, doctors set up clinical demonstrations using tools like blood pressure monitors, otoscopes, and thermometers, aiming to pique curiosity.

This annual event showcases more than careers in healthcare. The summit provides inspiration and shows children, if they can see physicians who look like their community, they can be in the medical field too.

The exhibits are designed to be hands-on and engaging for children ages 8 to 18. Each activity exposes kids to different health professionals like mental health counselors, adolescent health providers, and educators.

Volunteers from across UT Southwestern Medical Center handed out toy zebras for Rare Disease Day at the Dallas Zoo. Zebras are a symbol of rare disease. This comes from the saying taught to all medical students: “When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.” It is a metaphor for a given symptom; the patient probably has a common condition rather than a rare one. The zebras are the rare ones.

According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, about 300 million people are living with rare diseases worldwide. There are about 6,000 recognized rare disorders, which together affect 3.5% to 7% of the population. UT Southwestern/Children's Health was designated as a Rare Disease Center of Excellence in 2021.

Rare Disease Day is observed every year on February 28 (or 29 in leap years), the rarest day of the year. The goal is to increase awareness. To learn more about UT Southwestern’s Rare Disease Center of Excellence, visit: https://bit.ly/4b2pfLB.
