OCD and anxiety get lumped together all the time, but they donât work the same way.
Both can look like overthinking, distress, and feeling stuck in your head. But the engine underneath is different.
With anxiety, the mind scans for potential problemsâsometimes about the future, sometimes replaying the past:
âWhat if something goes wrong?â or âDid I mess that up?â
The thoughts can feel somewhat reasonable, even when theyâre exhausting.
With OCD, the mind gets hooked on specific intrusive thoughts that feel urgent and threatening:
âWhat if this thought means something about me?â
Thatâs where compulsions come inâthe urge to neutralize, fix, or prevent something bad from happening.
That cycle (obsession â compulsion â temporary relief â increased anxiety) is what keeps OCD going.
Both are real and so very exhausting. BUT, theyâre also both highly treatable, each requiring different approaches.
